I had a reworked sti exhaust hooked up to a borla knockoff header which sounded ok but was very quiet. The sti muffler had a loose baffle in it, I had cut it open spot welded it and welded the case back closed. It lasted about 6 months before the welds let go. I couldnt weld good in there from the all the carbon buildup.

So I threw the stock exhaust back on. Well, almost stock. Borla knockoff remains and it has an old flowmaster 40 series slapped on the end. It is on the loud side, has an aggressive boxer sound and a bit more interior resonance than I care for. This is it: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 5086&hl=en (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8853610830643785086&hl=en)

So, I'm looking for this mufflers replacement. I've considered a 60 series flowmaster but haven't heard one on a subaru. I'd really like to replicate this sound best I can: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWpc3R0sd5M
This clip has the tone I'm looking for and a certain smoothness about it, whereas my current setup lacks that smoothness. Yea I know that is an sti but I just want to get as close to that sound as possible and I only want to replace the muffler at this point (keeping the unequal headers on there of course).

He lists that muffler as: Magnaflow 5"x8" oval muffler with angle cut single wall tip (14834)
Now, he has a lot of other exhaust work all contributing to that sound so I don't think I can realistically expect that sound from headers, stock cats/mid and a magnaflow muffler but close maybe?

Not looking for any kind of gains, just sound.

Thoughts/input/recommendations on how to get that sound?

From what I've heard, turbo EJ25s sound smoother than NA EJ25s. It's most likely caused by the the turbo acting as a 'muffler'. So, I'm not sure if your going to get the same smoothness as that 08 STI.

I'd personally go with a Stromung unit, but I'm sure a universal magnaflow would sound great.

check stromung at boxer4rqacing.com.

do STi's have UEL headers?

Yes.

The stromung is no doubt nice but just too expensive. I can weld so I'm looking for a universal muffler that will sound good, they're also much cheaper. The flowmaster I have on there now is a chambered muffler. Does anyone have a glass filled muffler on their car? I think that may smooth the sound out. Will that still have a pronounced boxer note?

Do you have a resonator? I found that on n/a scoobs its almost a must to quel any resonance because there's no turbo to smooth out the exhaust pulses...

Does stromung only make 2.25" exhausts?

Whats size is the stock exhaust on a BD GT?

Any one know how a full stromung exhaust would conpare to a full STi exhaust both with lets say borla or borla nock-off headers?

the smallest stromung makes is 2.25". they go up to 3" though.

i was looking for a 2.5" but it doesnt list it on there sight or on boxer4? should i give stromung a call?

2.5" is giving up an awful lot of back pressure. Our little 4 cylinders need a little bit of back pressure to make enough torque. 2.25" would be my limit. I have a friend who drives a Neon with 2.75" exhaust and it lost a fair amount of torque compared to the 2" he used to have.

It has the stock resonator and cats. But you are correct.... when I had the sti exhaust on there is had a terrible rasp. I had to add a large resonator to get rid of it.

In response to other posts:
The sti exhaust I had on there was slightly less than 2.5" and I noticed no loss of torque.

I had borla knockoffs, full sti exhaust, custom 2.5" midpipe/high flow cat and the resonator that is mentioned above. Has some exhaust tone but was very quiet. I didnt notice any torque loss anywhere. Gas mileage seemed just a bit worse than stock setup though.

No one with a glass filled muffler?

2.5" is fine. Back pressure is a myth. It's all about preserving gas temperature - gas temperature = gas velocity.

You're talking about a glasspack? They sound like flowmasters. a1 fiddler has one on his BC.

yea i thought 2.5 would be good 3" seems like over kill on a 170 HP car

2.25" - 2.5" are both acceptable; the more pedantic a-holes on NASIOC may bitch and complain and say 2.25" is a must, but having had a 2.5" exhaust on a dyno, it made no noticeable difference.

The extra cost for 2.5" maybe the only disadvantage...

dont think il get ne more power what so ever out of the extra half inch?

maybe il just go with the 2.25"

do u know that the stock BD GT size is?

yea that why i wanted 2 go to 2.5.

2"-2.25" doesn't seem like a big improvement but i dont know much about exhaust flow

I have always heard that 2.25 is the all around best diameter for Subaru, but I'm no real expert.

It isn't much of your exhaust system was 2" long. Think about how much more flow you'll get throughout the entire system.
