View Full Version : Stock Intake questions

So I'm taking out my silencer and just had a few questions what else is part of my air system.

What is that top box to the left of the picture and is that the filter box? I'm looking at replacing it with one of those K&N drop in filters or something similar or possibly a short RAM.

The big box at the top of the engine bay is known as the "torque box" that stores air that can be readily dumped into the engine.

The location marked in the picture is indeed the filter location. You can see the two metal clips that hold the two halves of the filter box together. Just un-clip em' and wiggle the intake hose around until you can get the filter out; you may have to unscrew the metal clamps and loosen the whole tube.

Just make sure that the filter box is sealed tight when you put it all back together.

You could try reading your owners manual...

Looks like with that intake you could use a modified version of the ebay intake...the "torque box" as people call it has a lot speculation surrounding it.

My car runs better without.

yeah i litterally just read that sticky on the one guy doing it and it does not sound like a bad idea at all!
So rumor has it that the torque box does very little eh?

People are evenly split on the topic. I ran with one and one without. No difference in butt-dyno torque.

Your newer car + newer ECU might be tuned differently. At the very least I would get a silicone or alloy tube to get rid of the silencer section between the MAF and the torque box.

that thing on the filterbox, with the yellow dot on it, im assuming thats the MAF and is the torque box also known as the air box beacuse the one sticky i was talking about refers to the airbox which looks like the torque box in the guys pic.

You could, but I wouldn't. I'd use a bent section of metal or a Samco-type hose.
That hose you linked to is way to flexible to be any real use as an intake.

Yes, the torque box is where the air filter box is on the BE/BH and the MAP-based cars.

You'll notice that the newer Legacies/Subarus run MAF intakes now.
