hey guys, i found a subaru on craigslist the other day, and i think it is a good deal, but i wanted to get a few other opinions before i went to look at it. here is the url:
http://nh.craigslist.org/cto/880215574.html
it needs some work done too it, but i can do the work myself, and it shouldnt cost that much for just the parts. Also, i know that there are some common problems with older used subarus (head gaskets etc...) is there anything specific i should be looking for when i go to look at it other than just the usual things you would look at on a used car? any input is greatly appreciated. thanks,
Jake

Barring no major rust in the undercarriage or any extensive bodywork requirements, $2000 is a fair price. You could offer $1800 and put another $500 into it to get it ready for winter.

I would try to source some newer doors to handle that rust though.

also, that is a '97...hg issues...see if hg's been replaced....it is at that "magic" 120,000ish area where all(most) oem hg's start to fail!

I agreed with Huffer, haggle them about the price. And as mention by the seller, there a quite a few things that needed to be fix.

If you can take it to a mechanic and get a print out of what it needs, that could get the price down quite a bit. It took $4k off the asking price of my BH when I showed them that.

Thats a pretty good asking price. Like what was stated in the previous replies, you could bring it to a mechanic and have them give you a summary of what it is going to need, and you can negotiate a price from there

The obvious points of interest are going to be if all 4 calipers are working, all axles are in decent shape, and of course, the HG million dollar question. Also, just a visual inspection of the underneath of the engine will tell if any seals are leaking.
Some scummy dealership in my area sold a 97LGT which had pretty obvious front seal leakage (puddle right underneath the car where it sat) for 5K, and it had similar mileage than this outback here.

i bought it! 1900 bucks. he was very firm about the price. driving it around today i loved it, except when i got pulled over... it was just for the insection sticker though. now i just have to fix a few things to get it running like new, and hopefully it will be good for a while.
