I have been having a problem with my 98 Legacy 2.5 w/ manual trans. The CEL comes on and the code reader says it is due to an EGR issue. I have check the valves and it works fine. I can turn off the light and sometimes it stays off for a while other times it comes on right away. One thing I noticed is with the two vacuum lines that come off the throttle body: only one pulls a vacuum. Are both of these lines supposed to pull vacuum?
Any ideas would be apprciated.
Thanks
Justin

on the lines. one line pulls vaccum always. and one is throttle vaccum.
but what the code. malfuc, high, low,no flow?
malfuc and high flow usally are the solniod, but can be the egr sticking open.
low/no flow could be the egr stick and not opening, or not opening at all, or the egr/egr tube is clogged and need to be cleaned

I have cleaned the valve and associated plumbing. I have also swapped the solenoid with one that definately works. There seems to be alot of muck in the the Manifold where the EGR valve mounts. This is starting to drive me nuts.
I have cleaned the EGR valve twice. THe first time i was seriously clogged. The second time it was pretty dirty but not plugged. The CEL does not come on immediately. It took about 30-40 miles before it came on agaian.

make sure all passages are cleaned, and it takes 30-40 minutes because thats how long it takes the ECU to get around to checking the EGR

Any particular pathways that get clogged? Are they in the manifold?

im not exactly sure but i had to clean the passages on a honda pilot once, lol that took almost a day to clean them out

ack i've had this problem for a year, but random events like blown hg's make me think they keep getting reclogged.
Get some deep creep, pipe cleaners, and a tooth brush- make sexy time with all the tubes and openings.

man i truly hate EGR, what a shitty thing to do to a car, honestly.
if i didn't have to pass emissions i would've plugged the holes long ago and wiped the code from my ECU.
stupid emissions testing...

Does the metal pipe that links the manifold to the block vent the crankcase? I am wondering if excessive blow-by could cause the EGR malfunction. This car seems to be using alot of oil. No leaks and no smoke though.

no that's the EGR tube and it goes from the head the manifold IIRC.

What does it screw into on the bottom? Is it the exhaust port?

into an exhaust port on the drivers side cylinder head
