1996 shifter same as 1993?

I have a 2.2l manual legacy and I am looking to buy a replacement shifter so that I can make a short throw shifter, since no one seems to make one. Are the earlier legacy shift levers the same as the 1996? They look the same, but I want to make sure it fits before buying it. Thanks.

from what i have read on legacycentral it will only work it you change the hole linkage setup. maybe this link will help. http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=16268

I know the linkage needs to be changed for a wrx shifter, but the wrx shifter is completely different then the earlier model legacy's and the shifter I have.

In the 1996 2.2's and first gen legacy's the shifter has a fork welded on to it instead of of a hole through it for the linkage to attach. Another words, newer subaru shift levers have the female end and the older ones have a male end.

I am pretty sure the fork size is the same width with the 1996 legacy and the 93-95, but I am not sure about the pivot ball on the bottom of the shifter. Does anyone know if the ball on the bottom is the same size?
