is it posible to run my 2.5 head on an sti or wrx shortblock without a turbo?
i think i may have a rod knock and while i have the motor out i figured id take a step twards boosting it, but i know i dont have the cash or time to do the full n/a to turbo conversion, so is it possible or should i just replace whatevers massed up with OEM parts?
car is a 98 legacy outback

Yes, but it's not ideal. The STi/WRX shortblock runs lower compression ratio pistons and you'll end up with a terribly underpowered engine.
Best to check to make sure the STi/WRX pistons don't clear the block and hit the heads, otherwise you'll end up with a nicely bent valve.

ok heres another question, can i run my n/a 2.5 rotating assembly in the sti shortblock for a semi/full closed deck n/a block? so that way when the time comes i can just swap rotating assemblies and turbo

turbo manifold = no coilpack

what do you mean by that?

I don't believe that applies if you're just swapping a short block - that's basically the cylinders and pistons/crank. A long block would include the manifold etc.

Just fix the rod knock or get another ej25d shortblock, when you're ready for boost then get a shortblock meant for it.
You can build all kinds of frankenstein motors but unless you're getting the 257 for free I don't see any advantage if you're going to replace the internals anyway.
