View Full Version : Knock sensor

I had a CEL that was reading the knock sensor. I just got Huffers knock sensor on a few days ago and it ran fine for a day. Now it's back on and it's hesitating bad. Any other suggestions? I'm not sure when I can make it to my buddies garage to put it on a real computer instead of the damn code readers. So I need some things tossed out there that maybe I have over looked. Anything but a new engine, I'm not sure if I will go that far with this car.

Reset ECU?
Mines on 24/7, and yes...I heard it knocking awhile back. What can you do right? except a new block  ...

Yea I've done that a few times. It was driving ok with the CEL. Now it's running like shit.

Are you sure the hesitation isn't coming from somewhere else? ie vacuum lines?

That's what I'm looking for. But yes I checked all the lines already.

Just throwing things out...but any chance it's bad gas?

I thought that too, maybe winter gas. Because it's the same place where I go to get gas most of the time. Yesterday I put octane boost in it.

Those boost octane crap barely helps any. Try going to another gas station when the tanks almost empty.
I know during the winter time, they tend to mix the gas with ethanol. That gives you bad gas mileage...but not sure if it could trigger the cel to come on?

I'll try a different place today. I also used injector cleaner the other day.

Awww crap man. Did you pull the code again?

Yea same thing, I'm going to give my buddy a call tonight to see when I can run it on his computer. It should be able to tell me more. I don't know what it could be and it's driving me nuts. Driving isn't fun when it stumbles and hesitates all the time. All it does is make me think more about getting rid of it or part it out.

Knock sensor code again? With the same part I sold you? That doesn't make sense unless something is causing knock problems.

And can you hear the engine knocking?

That's exactly what I was thinking. My old sensor looked just as good as the one I got from you. So it has to be an internal problem. So I was hoping it was just bad gas. I figured with 248k the engine may be on it's way out.

Well if the body is as good as it looks in the pics, and given the work you've put into it... I wouldn't part it out. I'd find another motor.

The hesitation could be caused by bad gas, but it also could be caused from the fuel system. How's your fuel filter and pump. Your car does have a few miles on it, that's what I'd go for next. Bad pumps/filters can cause hesitation and bucking.
I wonder why you'd be throwing a knock sensor code though if your sensor was actually good. Are you actually experiencing knocking? Was the sensor you got from Huffer new?
Oh, has your gas mileage gone down?

The body is in good shape. I just could make more money parting it out rather than sell it whole.

What about timing belt? Could that have slipped causing it to be out of sync? Or maybe the timing belt tensioner is shot causing the timing belt to be loose. That would make the engine run rough and have excessive knock. Aren't they supposed to be done every 100k. And you say you have 240k on it?

I don't want to spend $300 to have the timing belt done.

Well you can drive it to the ground or change it yourself cheaply.
If the timing belt snaps let me know - I'm currently in the market for a cheap Subaru with a messed up engine to swap in my hybrid motor.

I did my own, and didn't spend that much :smt047
Hey, call me. I had to go through this with mine, remember.

ok so I finally got around clearing the code then having it scanned once it came back on after 2 minutes of the ECU reset. P0325 is the code. My knock sensor looked fine, and so did the one I got off of Huffer.
Al I just seen this, I'll give you a call.
