sometimes when the themastat doesnt open it wont pass coolant to the heater core and wont blow heat and the car will overheat because the water pump cant suck any water from the radiator.

overheating doesn't always mean headgasket. It could be any number of things. Do you see oil in the coolant reservoir? Is the coolant bubbly?

had my car do the same thing a couple weeks back i replaced the thermostat, didn't work, i had to replace my water pump and when i did i couldn't find a thing wrong with it, but my problem was fixed.

try the thermostat first 'cause it cheap and easy, the try flushing your collant system
then try replacing your water pump

usually when you get cold air from your went it means you blew your heater core and you have to see coolant leak it would be a big one. if you dont see any leaks and system sealed then it should be t-stat, air pocket, bad water pump and or hg.

after checking it, it is the head gasket and radiator is gone too(hg killed it), i'm not sure if i want to spend around a thousand bucks for an old car. i might just buy another Subie..(don't worry no Honda this time 1 is more than enough  )

Fix it and drive it. $1000 for an 11 year old car is only $91 a year. $7.50 a month. $0.26 a day.

SOHC subbies are a blast to work on, but dealing with DOHC quad cams is a PITA.
