Power Steering pump.. how hard to replace?

How hard is it to replace the power steering pump on a 99 BD? It doesn't seem TOO hard.. but is there anything I should be aware of before doing it? The reason I would be doing it is.. I think mine has a small leak. I see a small puddle of fluid on the top of the block every now and again.. even after cleaning it up.

What could be leaking? Is there anyway to find out what needs to be replaced? What are the common things that cause leaks on the power steering pump?

Anymore info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just did it on my friends bd it was super easy!!! One of the easiest I have personally done, his pump was leaking in two areas, where the copper washers are that connect the high pressure line to the pump, and it was leaking right out of the shaft where the pulley mounts. I think it took me and my friend about an hour and a half to do it. You probably are going to need a couple swivles to get to the bottom bolt. Other than that it was super easy, his was also missing the o-ring the connects the pump to the resivoir so it would leak a little there too!! I think the bolts are 12mm?

What do you mean need a swivel to get to the bottom bolt? Also.. did you guys just put a whole new setup.. or did you buy a rebuild kit for his? Mine is leaking.. i'm just not sure where from.. but its a very very minor leak..

You will probably need a swivel to reach the bottom mounting bolt on the front part of the pump. The pulley has holes in it specifically to get to the bolts. There are three in front total and a bracket on the back side right by the intake manifold, that has one bolt holding it. We did a whole pump, they are expensive but luckily for me and my friend we both work at O'Reilly Auto Parts lol!!! It was half the price of a regular walk-in customer!!!

No doubt.. how much can you get them for.. might have to hit you up on that. Also.. i have a CAI.. so it might be a bit easier to get to.. i think i might try to do this myself. Was it hard to re-fill the power steering fluid? How did you find works best? Thanks again man.

Find out where it's leaking from, first. Why waste money on a pump if it's a line that's the problem? If you can't find it yourself, check with your local garage/dealer. They often have a dye that can be added to they system and shows up under UV light. Put the dye in, drive for a while and check with a blacklight to find the dye/leak.

Any clue what the dye would be called? and yeah.. ive looked at it before.. and i cant find out where its leaking from.. so i might have to go with that idea.

I have the same puddle. I'm going to take a shot with a used one. I'm waiting for the member to get some free time and take pics for me. I've also heard the install isn't too bad.

yeah, I'm hoping the install isnt anything too complex.. especially since its getting pretty cold out right now. It would be nice to figure out where the leak is coming from however.. hmm.

Mine was leaking from the front seal behind the pulley. Got one at a junk yard for $15. Beat the heck out of trying to replace the seal. I'm lazy.

Took maybe 15 minutes to replace.
