New to the forum and have not posted in anything but the newbies thread. Thought I would share some progress on putting together a Rally legacy.

This build is on a very low budget. I picked it up for $400 bucks. It had an automatic transmission that was stuck in first.

First day at home off the trailer.

The car was amazingly clean for $400, as you can tell.

Few hours later after getting pics. I threw the winter wheels on from my WRX and test fit the Invidia exhaust from my WRX.

Couple of months later after using friends cars to run in the rallies. I decided it was time to cut the season short and spend some time on the Legacy and my car ready for next season.

This is the way the car sits as of the moment.

did you fix the trans? any plans for power?

Ruh Roh
11-02-2008, 02:43 PM
I have sort of fixed the transmission problem. I removed the Auto. I am looking for a 4.44 manual transmission. I have a 4.11 that is almost ready to go in.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/11/HPIM0202-1.jpg

As far as power goes: I have lots of options laying around

2- 2.5 blocks
1- 2L engine, needs torn down to see what is salvageable from my WRX
2- sets of sohc heads

and the 2.2 that came in the Legacy

More than likely I will build one of the 2.5 blocks while I run the 2.2 until it dies.

You're right!! I really do want your hood so I can get started on the carbon fiber one. Even Better I found some kevlar I had laying around

I just need to figure out a way to get your hood back here.
I think it will just barely fit in the 240, but I don't want to get up thre and not be able to get it all the way in.

Finally got a little bit of work done to the car. No pics right now.

Had to have the subaru dealership get my front diff out.
Made some indestructible mud-flaps and I stand by the word indestructable!
Wired up the IGN and FUEL switches.
Found my WRX fuel pump and '06 WRX injectors.
Think I have everything I need on order to delete the ABS & Brake Booster

Got all my blocks and heads gathered up and ready to go to the machine shop.

That is all I can think of for now. I am going to have a lot of parts off the car for sale soon!

Nope, no vids. I have drove the car onto a trailer to bring it home and drove it off. It has not started since, got right to work on it.

I do have vids and pics of me at rallyx's this year in my friends WRX.

another power option is to use the 2.2 liter heads with the 2.5 liter block. High compression frankenmotor.

Ruh Roh
01-08-2009, 07:17 PM
The roll cage is planned for next year sometime. Just doing local Rally-X with it till I get use to it.

The car will have some go fast parts:
4.444 manual transmission and rear diff- should be installed by next weekend
Using the factory 2.2 till it pops
2-2.5 NA blocks are being built for the car
heads laying around to use(all Pairs)= single cam, dual exhaust port; single cam, single exhaust port, and a set of WRX heads

The motors will be around 11:1 compression ratio while running E85 and eventually throwing a turbo at it!

I am very familiar with building subaru Frankenmotors. My WRX motor used an Sti crankshaft, Sti rods, 2.2L stock bore Wiseco pistons(had to machine the tops to clear the heads), Custom head gaskets from Cometic(5 layers), Stock 2.0L heads, stock WRX turbo on 7psi. This motor ended up at 10.2:1 on the compression. Miscalculations on my part, was shooting for 10.5:1. Close enough!

Plays_with_Toys
01-08-2009, 10:52 PM
Where are you located? There's a few e85 franken subies here in colorado.

Ruh Roh
01-09-2009, 05:34 PM
I am located in ohio. I might need to get in touch with those guys. This E85 thing is new to me and I am kind of worried about being bale to supply enough fuel to the motor. I could care less about MPG. I just want the best bang for the buck.

Thanks for all the compliments. I can not wait to get it running and post up some event pics.

love the legacy! saw the thread over on dirtyimpreza.

i was looking around and according to a calc. I found online 10.5:1 on a 2.5 is as easy as switching out the headgaskets for ej257 gaskets. i'm considering trying this out on my wagon build (also going for rallyx with the car)

Ruh Roh
01-28-2009, 08:58 PM
I will have to look into that. If it is that simple then I should have 2 extra 2.5's to use after I but some oversized ACL bearings in.

Good to see another DI member on here, Strat81.

01-28-2009, 09:15 PM
here's a link the the calculator i found...
http://www.jonesboy.com/Media/Matts_CR_calc_v1_01.xls

it allows you to play with different head, piston, block, and headgasket setups... need to do a bit more research to make sure the ej257 gaskets will work on the 2.5 block and heads (coolant passage alignment, etc)

btw, i'm jealous of the 4.11 tranny. i'd love to get a shorter ratio setup in the wagon.

Ruh Roh
01-28-2009, 09:31 PM
I am pretty sure the gaskets will work. I know some of the guys at the local Subaru Dealer and they all lined up. The only difference I noticed was passage ways for the coolant depending on closed, open, or semi-closed decks.

you are going to be even more jealous, cos the trans is a 4.444. If I am remembering correctly you can find that set-up in the 99-00 USDM foresters or switch out front diffs from an auto.

Just used the calc., A....mazing find. came out to an 11.32 with the set-up I want!

Eventually I will get some coilovers. Just running WRX struts with Sti springs and the Scooby921 spacers. I recently sold my '05 seats in order to get one FIA seat.

I have a 2.5l on the engine stand and ready to go in @ 11.32:1.

the light bar is mounted with a threaded piece of rod that goes all the way through the bumper with washers and nut on both ends. I never take the red center piece off, I just push it to the side when I am not running the light bar. The light bar and red piece connect with clevis pin. the outer edges of the light bar are held in where the a/c condensor use to sit by using a nut and bolt through the holes. It probably takes about 2-3minutes at most to put the light bar on or remove it.

redlegacygtThanks, it has been a good year! X-Games is always a last minute call. I think I got 3 days notice that year that I needed to get on a plane and get to LA, lol.

TGX4776The compression was pretty easy to obtain just by using a 2.5 block with 2.2 single port SOHC heads. I did a few other things like put in a STi crank, ACL race bearings, 2.5 n/a rods, 2.5 n/a pistons, cometic hg's, and a stock SOHC single port head. I also am using 05 sti injectors, my own parallel fuel rail set-up, ported and polished intake manifold from a 1.8(I think, it doesnt have the EGR port), walbro fuel pump, 98 DOHC RS ecu(higher rev limiter), and a safc.
I really want to get the car dynoed, but the closest one is about 2 hours away and I really just dont have the time to take it up there. A lot of people that have ridden in it compare it to a stock WRX with instant throttle response.

What do you think the motor would be like with dual port heads and a stock 2.2 intake manifold? I think I might copy the build for myself but with a few differences. It sounds like its plenty powerful.

I know it doesnt have the same compression. I believe the dual ports lower it to around 10:1. I think that is much safer for a daily. I cant remember what year/model the dual ports need to be to run a 2.2 manifold.

Right now I am running on E85 which helps keep the cost down some.
