Question about roof racks

I'm looking into a roof rack for my car..but it looks like the only way to secure it is by clips that go under the lip around the door trim. However, I'm very skeptical about the strength of the black trim around my door (I had a roof rack on my car last year secured this way and the trim snapped off sending my rack and three pairs of skis onto the freeway). I would like to avoid a repeat occurrence of this, is there another way to attach it, maybe under this piece of trim? I know this seems like kind of a weird question, but I haven't found an answer to it really anywhere. I guess that's how it's supposed to go, it just seems odd to me.

i dont think any roof rack company has a design that uses something other then the clips that go on the trim for the legacy sedan. on my rack i have the clip so the just start to pull up the trim but not over tight, but still tight to the roof.

I'm assuming it's a sedan, right? If that's the case, then you're stuck on that one. You could maybe have a local fabrication shop fab something up for you.

you're supposed to slip the clips underneath the black trim. It's supposed to clip directly onto the roof.

I would think that would be the right way to do it, but it seems like there's no way to do that..maybe I'll take some pictures later. I know that's the way all roof racks work, I'm just wondering, there has to be plenty of people out there with Subaru Legacies that have roof racks. It also seems like the window glass would hit the metal clip when it shuts (and also prevent the window from making a proper seal around the door).

mine the glass goes past the metal clips so the clip sit on the outside of the glass
