what would be required to put an amp and woofers into a 97 legacy with stock head unit?
is there anyway to hook up the subwoofers to the stock head unit or would i HAVE to get a different one?

Yes you can hook up an amp to a stock head unit. You need a line output converter.

you'd need an amp that could have the high level input from a speaker, i wouldn't do that though, get a head unit with a sub out, it'll sound better and you'll have less headaches wiring everything up

whats THE cheapest head unit that will do a decent job? i wanna do this on the CHEAPPP. but i dont want it to be noise either.. but im not expecting phenomenal results either..
on a side note.. my friend got subs put in his new charger.. and i dont really have the heart to tell him it sounds like sh*t.... but his woofers sounds kind of delayed.. they hit about half a second after you would expect them to hit in any given song... why is that?

tbh without knowing more i'd say he has bridged the amp incorrectly or has a badly built box...
but thats a step in right direction 10's may not kick as hard as a 12 or 15 inch woofer but to ears provide a cleaner/sharper bass
i have a pioneer 765w 2 channel amp and 2 pioneer 10" subs sounds great hooked up to my cheap Panasonic head unit, and there in a very nicly constructed box

oh uh. well actually i knew that was involved. ive done that a bunch of times actually.. to wire my radar detector.... but i guess what i was really asking was pairing up the wires to the new harness a pain in the ass..? cuz i know what everything else entails..
im jus tworried about hooking up the harness...

Depends on where you get your head unit from. If you get it from Crutchfield, they take care of that for you.

if you get a harness adapter then the only wiring you need to do is with from the adapter to the provided hardness with the head unit

Factory headunit will be fine. You just need the diagram from the harness behind the stereo. Usually you would hook up the line level converter to the front channels and tap into the acc switched power lead for the remote turn on for the amp. Your friends system was just not tuned correctly. The crossover was most likely adjusted too low of a frequency and you are hearing the low bass and not the full spectrum so it sounds delayed. 80-100 hz is about right for 10's and if there is a subsonic filter, turn it to the lowest setting.

Yes you can use your stock head unit, I did so for 6 months using my stock Subaru radio. Get a line out converter and tap into your rear speaker wires. The line out converter will translate the speaker signal into an RCA output which will plug directly into the amp. The only other wires you need to run are the power and ground for the amp.

how different is the audio coming out of the front and rear speakers... would it be better to tap into the front or rear speakers.... if using the factory head unit and a line converter.
