stock rear speaker sizing in 97 legacy sedan

what are the stock sizes for rear speakers in a 97 legacy L sedan.

the rear speakers are blwon out and i wanted to pop in some new ones.



after i find out the size... any recommendations on CHEAP speakers? i planned on goign to wal mart and grabbing the cheapeset known brand i could find.
liek pioneers for 40 bucks...

so you think if i find 6.5 inch speakers.. that have a 6.75 inch mounting tabs... you think those will fit?

They are 6.5" speakers. If they are in the rear dorrs, you need to worry about depth as the window track it there.

it´s a sedan, so they would be in the back window area

im guessing the 97 legacy still has shelf speakers like my 95, and they are a hassle to get to. had to remove rear seat and backrest and rear quarter panels and trim just to get to the speakers. good news is my new speakers sound great (my old rear speakers were completely blown :lol: ).

And that, right there, is why I'm leaving my stock ones in until they blow.

^^ that's not 100% correct. If the speakers are in the rear parcel tray (and they should be if you have a sedan), then removal of them is simply:
1. remove bottom seat cushion 2 bolts
2. remove back seat upright cushion 3 bolts at the bottom, 2 hooks at the top
3. grab rear parcel tray and bend towards you pulling evenly (you're crouched in the middle of the car)
4. speakers are exposed, pop the trunk, dive in and disconnect them and then go up top and unscrew them

installation of new ones is the reverse.

Took me all of about 30mins to upgrade mine in my 98 BD.

Well that changes things then. I changed the speakers on my '97 Escort years ago and it was easier than that, but that doesn't sound too bad.

can somebody tell me what size the opening is?

i just bought some 6.5 inch speakers from wal mart from the brand Dual... and they didnt fit right.

under the flange, the speaker was a little large for the opening so it wouldnt sit flush with the opening. i looked at the box and it said cutout diamater: 4.62
considering it JUST missed...

im guessing something with 4.5 or so would fit?

can someone confirm?

btw. im too lazy to make a spacer to make them fit properly.. id rather just find some speakers that drop in and fit...


im thinking of putting in cheap sony speakers. i saw someone said they dropped in sony speakers fine.. can you tel me which model you bought?

umm i have speakers with a 5 1/18 cut out (with the brands stock 1/8 spacers). ive seen 5 1/2 fit.
most speaker have spacers they mount to to adapt to the factory pattern

I put in a set of 5.25" Alpine Type S coaxials. Just sat them on top, rotated them a little, tapped a small hole and used self-tapping screws right into the parcel tray metal. Slid the cover back over, wired them up, good to go.

i just went to a stereo shop. they said subarus are weird

teh best fits are the 5.25 inch eclipse se5000 or osmething and theyre good cheap sound that fits perefectly...

i tried some pioneers off amazon that are available at wal mart.. theyre 39 at wal mart and they are trash....

anywayz.. ill figure this out.... cheers

Was hoping to hold off on different speakers for as long as possible, but my rear left speaker just blew this week.
Is this common? Or did putting 45w from my Sony deck to it kill it? If I rememebr right the stock radio was 80w (20w x4).

i think stock speckers are 25watt max.
