right indicator blinking fast...no bulbs blown

So this is a weird gremlin that I haven't ever encountered.

This morning on the way to work my turn indicator on the dash suddenly decided to blink faster... No worries, I figured a blown bulb.

Parked, left the right indicator on and walked around the car. All bulbs working correctly.

Switched indicator to left side and repeated, again, all bulbs fine.

Switched indicators off, hit hazard button for all indicators - all bulbs operating - but right side still making a slightly faster clicking.

any ideas?

Disconnect the battery, take out the right side bulb and check for any rust. Clean it out with some electrical cleaner or grease. It should be fine.

I had a problem with the corolla. Over time water/moisture gets inside creating corrosions/rust. Update this when you get it working :eek:

I have the same problem - right side front lamp.

Cleaned the thing out 3 times and now I am tired of fighting it, so I live with the fast blink.

Thing is, it doesn't blink fast when I just use the hazards, and when my parking lamps are on its almost a tad slower than normal.

So all of a sudden today on the way to work the problem went away by itself. I was literally in mid-turn, when the blink started clicking at the right speed.

I spent the rest of my drive annoying the heck out of people behind me because I kept my blinker on just to see if anything was up.

I am still going to take the bulb out and check the harness for a weird shorting.

I will also disconnect the battery and clean the terminals up a bit. that might help also.

Oh, and to add. Make sure the pins on the bulb are touching the contacts in the socket...and vise versa. Sometimes bad connections will trigger the slow blinkingness.. :lol:

I forgot to mention that it fixes itself now and again, another reason I quit fighting it.

Any fix at the bulb has been temporary and a cursory inspection of the wiring around it shows nothing.

My hazards all blink at the same rate, but the front right is dimmer than all the rest......

Added: Also, the blink rate slows way down when the parking lights are on.

Try changing the offending bulb. They can burn the filament so that it occasionally makes contact. IE: hit a bump, it makes contact. Hit another bump, no contact.

Thats true, myold E36 has this issue,,freplaced the bublb with one from autozone! it went away :D

Just a quick update on this one - the problem came back a couple of weeks ago, and I decided to leave it alone just to see if it would clear itself again. It didn't, so I pulled the bulb and replaced it with a new one. Problem solved.

I checked the bottom of the old bulb, and while it wasn't a blown filament, the contacts on the base had become corroded with rust. I cleaned the socket out just to be sure.
