how exactly can i clean my engine?

You can just use normal degreaser or get some engine shine stuff from the store where all the other detailing supplies are. Just spray it on and let it soak for several minutes and hose it off. i normally use a pressure washer when I do it just because I usually wash my car in a wash bay at a body shop. You should probably make sure your engine running when you hose it off so nothing electrical gets yet, preventing you from starting your car. You will probably hear your belts squeak which is normal when they get wet.

i can probably get an endless supply of degreaser from work...i dont think they would care much

I use simple Green automotive also when rinsing off make sure you cover the alternator with a bag and don't hit any electrical connections with water if possible.
