I'm looking at a 1999 Legacy Outback wagon automatic with about 107K miles that has a bad bearing (very loud). I can't seem to find a used engine at the salvage yards. Are there other years that will interchange with this car or do I have to buy the 1999 motor? I don't supposed it's practical to replace the bearings and possibly the crankshaft? This car has a rebuilt transmission, new brakes and a few other repairs that added up to more then $3000 in service. Any suggestions or places to find a used motor would be greatly appreciated?

Okay that's what I thought. Are the earlier pre '97 SOHC and the '97-'99 DOHC? From what I see it looks like it is a major engine disassembly to get the rod bearings and cranshaft out of the engine.

There are always used engines on eBay, some of them are fairly cheap. Depending on the costs of labor and parts to rebuild your engine, it may be cheaper to buy a new short block.
