well i was doing some reading on the nasioc forums which are down cause of wilma :( , but what can u do. there is a guy on there who goes by the name nitro don. he has done a full conversion of an sti into his 96 imprezza. i mean everything engine, wiring harness, tranny, rear sub frame, diff, axels, dash, heater core, seats, pedals, he just used the shell of the imprezza. he also told me where he got his totaled sti from and how much (12k  ) well im also considering to follow is his foot steps but install it all in my bg legacy. i wanted to know if there is anyone in the process of doing this? was considering just having a company due it but it would be 4k for labor and it would mean splicing wires i want a full conversion. please fell free to give me any thoughts you have. this project isnt gonna officaly start till maybe this summer cause i need to get me a sti first.
thx in advance

I am doing a full version 6 STi conversion into a 97 GC8 impreza. I was going to do a swap into my BD legacy but decided to keep that as my reliable daily driver. If I remember correctly all the GC8 impreza stuff bolts up to 1st gen legacies (with a little elbow grease). I think having a shop do it may be your best bet though, theres a lot more to all this than it sounds.

I assume you’re talking about a USDM STI swap? In that case, the parts are WAY over priced. You can build a hybrid WRX/STI swap for half the price you quoted he paid and still end up with a comparable setup. Or as Sheepdog (BTW, DC huh, I’m right up the road) mentioned, a JDM (ej207) setup for cheap too. I just can’t see dropping 12k on parts, then another 4-6k on install all in a -10k car. You can buy a used STI for less than that.
An example of a hybrid:
EJ257 block
WRX/JDM heads
WRX harness, ecu
Built 5MT with say PPG gears
Or
Forester 5MT with PPG gears
Matching rear diff
I say around 6k in parts
$.02 :)

well it all maters on the price of the car itself. i also would not be paying to have the work done anywhere. all the work will be done in my garage in queens. yes it would be i guess cheaper to buy an sti but my whole thing is i want to be a sleeper/fastest bg legacy. once the swap is done the car is going to ics performance where we are going to aim for 500whp. thx for your advice, keep it coming.

I would go with what xcntrk75 was saying, definitely go JDM as opposed to USDM, you are gonna pay a buttload for the stuff you are gonna need for our STi. I can give you the email of someone who can get you the front clip of a JDM legacy twin turbo, that was the route I was going to go when I was gonna swap engines in my BD. If you are aiming for 500whp, a single turbo conversion wouldnt be that big of an inconvenience. Oh, and if you are going for more than 300whp DO NOT get a stock usdm WRX trans. Ive seen 3 of them go in a year :(.
Oh, and xcntrk you should check out ECB, we meet every thursday in fairfax, we have a bunch of maryland guys. Hang out for a bit and go to dinner, its real low key. Click my profile if youre interested.

TT setup won't work on a LHD car. At least, not without some work.
FYI, Garage Tuning in California will install an STi setup into any Subaru for around US$6k, I believe that includes the price of the parts too.
Rallitek (or Rallispec?) is near you - I'd suggest calling them and finding out how much they would charge.
Unless you are a mechanical and electrical genius, this isn't an easy thing to do, and have it reliable.

Yea, I was doing a RHD swap too, forgot to say that.
If you have access to Rallitek, definitely talk to them. They quoted me 6k for the TT RHD swap. They know their stuff.

i have allready spoke to rallispec in nj and they said it was 3500 for the install of the engine, tranny, and spilicing in the ecu. i want the wiring harness to be the full harness of the sti. i would say that im good enuff to do the swap on my own, also i know someone who has done one who said he is willing to help me along with it.

It won't be the full STi harness. The STi has bits in it that your Legacy won't have. Or doesn't need. Anyway...
Will you be swapping the 6spd USDM STi? Or just the engine?
I haven't heard of anyone who has gotten the DCCD to work in a non-WRX or STi model from a different year.
Drivetrain swap requires custom driveshaft too, and maybe a different rear diff. Factor in axles, and you might as well swap out for 5x114.3 hubs, as they're stronger. More wheel options with those hubs too.
Don't forget about the drive-by-wire and clutch differences too.
Way I see it, if you figure your time is worth more than $4000 to do a swap that will be functional to the point of being able to run a stock STi ECU, be OBDII compliant (and therefore, able to handle all the memory flash upgrades and whatnot), go for it.
Personally, I suck at wiring, so I'd be paying someone to do it, if it were me.

well it will be the full harness cause im tranfering almost everything to the legacy, yes i will be going with the 6spd tranny. and from my under standinf no custom drive shaft will have to be made cause of the fact im swapping out the full rear sub fram of the sti into the legacy. im swaping axels, hubs, everything is being changed so u will be able to just mate it all up. here are some links to nitro don posts on nasioc here they are take a look for your self

Good luck man. Its not cheap as I'm learning. But, a stock USDM STi is too flashy for my tastes; which is why I'm headed for the older Legacy look.
A US STi wiring job isn't ALL that much more complicated than a JDM version; don't get me wrong, it has its nuances, but for the most part, its the same.
JDM is the definite way to go for power.
If you have to be concerned for emissions legalities, then watch what ECU you use. And if its an older Subaru, make sure to get the emissions equipment you need to satisfy the requirements of your particular swapped ECU.

fourstar motorsports in canadia said the brembos of a full sti swap are to wide for bd/bg's. unless you modify of course, then anything could be done.

Serious on NASIOC did a complete, I mean COMPLETE, JDM STi Ver8 swap onto his 96 BD. Suspension, brakes, R180 diff, motor, tranny....its like he took off the Impreza shell and put on a Legacy body kit.
Says it goes like stink! Can't wait!

Kraziken: I have exactly the same car as you (Leg GT 99 white ) with a STI V7 complete swap. I see that you still have the factory hood with the small hood scoop! Don't you have any heat problem with that?
Wiscon_Mark
12-12-2005, 11:32 PM
pssst. The Legacy scoop is more efficient despite its smaller size ;)
It has to do with the longer hood, the STi scoop was a rushed design on a short hood.

What transmission is in that car?
If you want to drag race, 6-speed is probably not the best option.

on Kraziken's?
He's still running stock GT 5MT...

The best one for the drag would be the STI RA 5 speed.

I haven't had any heat problems so far. Someone else was asking about the small Legacy scoop too.
As far as the Tranny.
It's really a hybrid.
It's a WRX case, but the internals were rebuilt with my Legacy gears, with a Exedy heavy duty clutch.
I considered a JDM WRX tranny with a 4.44 final drive but folks complained about the high rpm on freeway. And I know WRX folks complain about the long legs of the 3.9 final drive. The Legacy 4.11 final drive just seemed like a good fit, and it's what I was used to. :-D
So far no problems. I don't drag race so it should be fine for awhile. I splurged for the motor and didn't want to pony up the coin for the 6 speed STI tranny. Plus it leaves something for me to upgrade in the future.
