ummm...is it really awd?

so last week, the grandpa drives me over my new 95 bk from montana, he tells me that the guy he got it from says its awd, but i dont see an awd badge on the back, traction seems like it is but then again its impossible to spin tires of any car with only +/- 100whp, when i open the hood, i see a tiny box that says fwd in the upper left corner. i know that 96 was the year they made leggys standard awd, im second guessing myself now...how can i find out?

i have that little fwd box in my 98 and i know thats awd...your should be

if it has a fuse spot for FWD im guessing its a AWD model. look under the rear of the car does it have a rear diff.

Search on the FWD fuse. It's AWD. Relax!

EDIT: Another thing, you are driving an automatic. Which means in D position you'll hav 90/10 front/rear torque split. If you switch to 3, 2 or 1 you'll have a 50/50 front/rear torque split. This is useful in inclement conditions. It defaults to 90/10 to provide maximum fuel economy savings due to the additional weight of the auto tranny.

Your first mod is to drain and refill the tranny twice, and then add a bottle of Lubegard ATF Protectant. That will drastically (over the next 100miles) improve the shifting and lower the tranny temps. It'll also prevent (with regular changes) premature torque binding. Do a search for that one too.

Umm, I'm pretty sure a dead give-away would be a driveshaft leading to the rear where a rear diff would be.

The 95's had a sticker that had "AWD" or "AWD ABS" on the rear window, there was no badge.
If the rear window were replaced, then the sticker would be gone.

All Subaru models in the U.S. since 1994 have symmetrical AWD. :smt023

Don't forget, FWD was offered up until 96. So not all Subarus were AWD at that time.

So, it isn't entirely impossible someone made a mistake, but if there is the FWD fuse in the engine bay, then no need to worry.

Can't you look under the back of the car? If you see a round thing with to sticks going to the rear wheels, you have AWD. If it ain't there, you have FWD.

yes, i did so.. it was dark last night and i dont have a flashlight(and i didnt wanna be dissapointed) but we're good.
