When you say knocking noise, you don't mean engine knock then? Like the tapping noise of lifters?

When you start the car, is it in gear and slapping around in the 1st gear slot, or do you have it in neutral and its wagging back and forth there? I don't think a clutch problem would do anything to the shifter if the car were in neutral. Pop the hood and start the car, you should be able to see the engine through the window, just under the gap of the hood. If the engine is rocking back and forth, that'd explain the shifter rocking.

Or better yet, have a friend start the car while you look around in the engine bay. Since the problem is at idle and at start up, it'd give you the perfect chance to look around.

i have the same problem....infact gets louder when the car has run for a couple of hours...and the part that you have highlighted is it shaking?? my mechanic...who is a subaru rallyst said that the forks for the clutch release assembly have gone off shudnt cause damage....but might need to be realigned...if you have time and money for labour charges it shudnt be a long job

If the shifter is moving around alot it could be an engine mount problem. Try running the engine with the hood open and see if the engine movement matches the shifter movement.

Pulled out the engine and checked out what the problem was...it has nothing to do with my clutch...its all in my block...I don't have a knock or anythn coz I recently got my engine rebuilt with new pistons, rings and oil pump plus the rod bearings...the only problem is that when I got my crank reground, the engineer did not measure correctly...so when the car heats up, it expands and wiggles about...am done with this av spent over 900USD building it I think its time for the SWAP..
