we just got 2-3 inches of snow while i was at school
on my way home i was starting to go thru the turn i started sliding straight line into a guard rail

front passenger side hit...then back end hit

font passenger side is where the damage is i just have to repaint the back passenger corner of the bumper for the third time since the summer

bumpers twisted, fenders not too bad, turn signal tabs all broke so if anybody wants to donate or sell for really really cheap pm me

more pics later on

GTDrifter
11-20-2008, 09:57 PM
i usually take the corner at 60 i went 20-25...maybe faster idk the airbags didnt go off

my bumper is twisted but you cant see in the pics i might have a flat tire too

im taking pics tomarrow in the daylight but i already bent the fender and bumper back out but the bumper is still pushed over my foglight

ahh man that really sux!, yeah we got like 5-10" here depending on where you are farther away from buffalo ny and the more snow you get, like in the southowns close to ski country!

yeah i love my subby in the snow, however sometimes its a little squirrelly!, although when i got my new forrester rims, i got them with snows. So far i friggin love them excellent handling, ok stopping! all and all i have to only say that my only complaint is the stopping in the snow kinda crappy

i hope everything works out with you !!!

Hey man, I got a GT Limited front bumper in silver if you are interested.. also have fogs if you broke those.. and will have a fender soon with a SMALL dent (i bought a new one cause im really picky.. tho the dent is smaller then the size of a golf ball really.. and hardly noticeable). Let me know if your interested in any of this stuff.. its all in the same color as your car.

yeah i have directional rain tires on...guess their not too good in snow

and since the dealership didnt replace the broken rain guards i have to crawl underneat the car in the snow and wedge them back on again lol

it could have been much worse though and im glad it wasnt

It's hard to react in these types of situations, and honestly a lot has to do with experience. Not that I am super experience, but I know I had a lot more close calls in highschool than I do now. The last time I plowed with understeer, I blipped the throttle to induce oversteer and then feathered the throttle to powerslide away from the barrier (it was a curb in my case, hit a the dipped gutter on the entrance to a shopping center, and when I came over the top my tires got light and I start sliding).

Hope you can get it back together quick.

Sorry to see, hear that.

Living in the snow belt means that snow is inevitable. I'd allmost bet Your tires the biggest factor in the accident. Dedicated snow tires will save your azz, at least a set of All Seasons with the snow/mountain symbol on them.

pulled the ebrake and that did nothing..

If you're sliding out of control, I don't think the locking up the rear wheels does much good...

based on the description, it doesn't sound like an out of control slide - more like a "failure to turn". Which means that your speed was above what your tires could handle based on the conditions.

Some tires are GREAT in the snow in a linear fashion - point them mostly straight and they'll go - but ask them to change direction more than a couple of degrees and they have no ability to do so - meanwhile your rear wheels are still pointing straight, and they're going great because that's what they're designed to do.

In these situations, where your tires are overwhelmed, there's very little you can do except try to slow the rotation of the wheels as much as possible without locking up the tires until you can shed enough speed to make a turn. Basically, pumping the brake peddle a lot - ABS.

Next time don't pull the ebrake... you'll maintain more control if your tires are able to rotate.

Get a new set of snow tires and drive with caution!

doesn't anyone steer into the skid anymore? They still have it in the driver's manual...

Glad you're not hurt, that's the important part.

i dont have extra cash to get snow tires cause my hours got cut at work and considering the speed limit was i think 35 mph i was being cautious

The speed limit was 35, and you usually take the corner at 60?!?!? :smt018 :smt021

To me it sounds more like driver error. Yes, snow tires would have helped, but it sounds like some overconfidence and then failure to correct properly. You took the turn 5-10mph under the posted speed limit with terrible tires for snow driving, started to slide, hit the brakes AND pulled the e-brake (wtf?) and then hit the wall. Maybe it couldn't have been prevented, who knows, but that's how the facts present themselves.

He said he goes 60 around the corner in good conditions. I believe he said he drove at about 25mph when he had the accident.

huh? PWT was giving you a tip for handling a skid. Usually when you start sliding (ass end out), you turn the wheel into the direction of the skid and hit the gas to induce oversteer in the other direction to straighten yourself out. It's definitely not something you get right the first time. I'd suggest screwing around in a nice empty (large) parking lot so you can get a good feel for your vehicle's dynamics in slippery conditions.

As for being able to afford tires - I think a good set of tires is way better than paying an insurance deductible. I understand a money crunch though, and that sucks dude - a lot of people (myself included) are feeling the economic stress.

Be safe out there, nobody wants to see people get hurt.

I just got lucky as he11, found a set of used Blizzaks (used one winter) on stock Subie wheels on CL. $150

Check out Firestone Winterforce. A very economical snow tire.

I see them at the salvage yard all the time. Seems they're economically viable on a rig that Peeps are not looking to sink a lot of money for tires on. AKA: gonna junk it in the spring.

Mazda B2000's use the same 205-70-15 tires

if you would have cocked the wheel, dropped the clutch you woudl have not hit th guard rail....just saying

I know that, read through my post again. 60mph in a 35 on public roads through a corner even in good conditions is a big no-no in my book.

Either way, to me it sounds like overconfidence in the snow and then a failure to know what to do when the car starts to slide.

ass end didnt kick out til i hit the guard rail...i crappily drew a diagram

i have an auto so dropping the clutch is impossible

i was working on it today in the sun and found out that theres a chip off the front passenger rim, the rims all scraped up...my foglight mount is bent and the foglight has a chunk taken out of the housing so i took that out....my steering rack boots are yet again ripped after i just spent $300 bout 2 months ago to get them fixed

the black curve is the road...the square is how my car was the black arrow is how my tires were pointed the red line is how my car was going and the red line at the top is the guard rail

were you in D?

being in 3 or 2 would have helped if that was the case, cause your car would've switched to a better split for winter traction. instead of the 90/10 or whatever our BD's have in D with the 4EAT.

What's done is done, so just be glad there was a guard rail there and nobody was seriously injured. Everything will get figured out with time.

alright guys let's not start anything....

rougeben83
11-23-2008, 03:10 PM
back end stepping out, front end not turning even with the wheel cocked, in both situations you steer towards the skid to regain the tire's grip. Basically what happened to you was you turned the steering wheel and the tires didn't have enough lateral grip to change the car's momentum, and you plowed/understeered. This happens more nowadays than spinning rearward into an object. Steering momentarily into the skid will allow the tires to regain some traction and you can try to change course again...basically what youre doing is "resetting" the grip of the front tires so you can change course again now with the help of the throttle or whatever other input you chose. Locking the rear wheels wouldn't help you as you were skidding because your front tires didn't have grip to begin with; you'll still be going straight.

The theory is easy to type, its the practice that's hard to do, even guys that track their cars regularly will crash from this kind of mistake so just live and learn from it...

The tires won't have any initial bite if the tires are worn out.
Cold weather = low pressure in tires, low presure = less grip.

I suppose the guys that offroad on ice and snow are doing it wrong then. Youre sacrificing lateral wall rigidity (i.e. sloppier feeling steering input) but lower tire pressures help spread the tire tread on the surface so your grip will be a little better.

It's better than OVERinflating tires and thinking you'll get better grip there.

so THATS why i lower my tires pressures offroad...for less grip.
or at the track, for less grip.

Umm... You musta been a broke teenager at one time? (I'm just assuming this, after interpreting some of 2.5gt's posts)

I remember my first winter driving. Had a '62 Chev Bel Aire 262cid Powerglide. Just enough power to get it down the road. The tires were so bald, I ended up in the ditch more than I was on the road. My Dad finally got so fed up pulling Me outta the ditch, that He bought Me a used set of tires. He never bought Us anything else for our rides. It was 100% our responsibility to keep them drivable.
