What grill is that? I've never seen it before.
That is a modified version of the ChargeSpeed BG-5 Zenki Front Grill w/ Eye Line. Funny story about the eye line..
Bought it off ebay, and because of a shipping mishap, the grill came with both eye lines broken! So I decided to show off my mad dremel skillz and just cut off the broken part that goes over the headlights.
Here's some pics I had posted on my new member's thread.

Doing some fixin' and takin' apart since it was such a nice day!
Fixed the JDM sidemarkers so they are on with the parking light and then are also turning signals that alternate with the other ones.
Took off the bumper for the first time just for FUN!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG_0162-1.jpg
But seriously, I took it off because I was taking the old fog lights out, wanted to see how the factory fog lights fit and to finish cutting out the bumper for the JDM fog lights I want to get.
I was really surprised about how many PLASTIC screws held on the bumper, thought more metal would be used..

My friend got blue LED's for his car and I asked about it. He told me to just go on ebay. they're pretty cheap and there's a few colors to choose from. and of course the more LED's the better. My light only has 4 LED's while his has 16 LED's.

I am having trouble clearing codes right now tho, PD240 i think?? I need to keep reading the manual and figure it out, it IS switched over to SUPPORTED mode so that is not the problem. I don't really need to clear the code i have now tho because it comes back in about 100 miles. Gets annoying to keep clearing that..
This thing is still really fun to mess around with while driving.. safely.. haha!

I think you mean P0420, right?
http://www.obd-codes.com/p0420
The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.

So if you didn't notice I got the MSD coil and did the DIY on that + NGK wires +NGK Iridium Plugs, and to finish it all off I put on some Noltec steering rack bushings. What a pain in the ass to put on.. there's a whole story I'll tell later about that.. I'll put up pics soon.

Got the MSD coil to work! Definitely noticed a small increase of power at pretty much any speed. Took me 2 times to get it right. Turned the key the first time and it backfired! That was pretty funny. Kinda just guess and check on the wiring. And the sound!! much more boxer rumble, I love it. It looks pretty BAMF too. Makes me wanna get some bright yellow intake tubes and paint the strut bar ends pink just to add to the crazy colors! I'll update the MSD thread as requested Huffer. https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=11704
Put on Noltec Steering Rack Bushings using the DIY here. https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=867 OMG those were a pain in the ass! Started with the driver side one. Bending the power steering lines out of the way was ok. They can move a lot! Then the steering rack wouldn't drop out low enough to pull out the bushing so I loosened the 12mm bolt that connects the steering rack to the shaft. Moved about a 1/2 inch down and the bushing just barely slid out! Putting it in was easy. Then the passenger side bushing decided to be melted/glued to the steering rack. I had to cut it off! There's still some rubber on there that would not come off. So that makes the new bushing VERY snug when it's fully tightened.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/07/IMG_0374-1.jpg
Thats a pic of the old bushings, driver side is fine but eh passenger side... well, it didn't make it.. AND good thing I got new spark plug wires! The metal end of one of the wires broke and stuck to the spark plug when I took it out. Didn't expect that to happen. After I got everything back together and took it for a drive, and the first thing I noticed was the steering wheel is NOT straight when the car is going straight :smt021
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/07/IMG_0371-1.jpg
This picture is of the wheels going straight. It moved over to the right about a half inch.. There's no alignment problem because when I let go of the wheel in motion it still drives straight, its just the steering wheel lol. I guess it moved when the bolts were all loose and I was tugging on the steering rack to drop it just a bit. Any ideas on how to fix it? I'm thinking just loosen the 12mm bolt connecting the steering shaft to the rack again and turn the steering wheel every so slightly to the left and then tightening it back up. The truth is that I hardly even notice the wheel is off a bit when I'm driving so it's not in need to immediate attention. Still had hella fun doin this stuff!

Easiest way to fix the steering wheel is to swap in an 02-03 WRX wheel. :D

Sorry, but this is incorrect. Since Navi's car is pre '98 you will have to purchase a proper clockspring and change the clockspring to make the blinkers cancel correctly. Also the airbag wiring is completely different and will not work. Your best bet would be to try and find out if a JDM equivalent year ('95) would work.

ANYWAYS, new stuff!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/08/IMG_0387-1.jpg
Function7 Pitch Mount and as gator gt said "makes the firewall act like a speaker!!!" and it is SO true! Sounds like you're in the engine bay when you start the car. I love it! I can now hear every noise my engine makes.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/08/IMG_0388-1.jpg
Also heat wrapped my headers today. Took a while to do because I didn't take the header off the car and I didn't want to cut the wrapping into a bunch of pieces. The "sewing machine" sound that these headers have is now basically gone, so now the SPT axleback can show off! You can also see the blue steering rack bushings which are still holding up just fine.
I guess today was just a sound modification day. Soon i'm also going to fix the P0420 with spacers and cut off or weld those rattling cat heat shields because they are getting even more annoying now that other things are sounding better.. Getting winter tires to go with winter wheels soonish too.
Nice! I want to do the steering rack bushings too because mine makes so much noise when I hit a bump!

Definitely looking at getting a 1 to 1.5inch drop in the near future since the suspension hasn't been touched since it rolled off the lot almost 15 years ago! But now just saving up money, exploring options, and researching.

Right now I'm just gonna leave it how they are (low beams turn off when high beams turn on). I kinda like how I can make them seem like wig wags lol. Maybe a future mod tho, as doing that would make them even brighter! Seriously tho.. just getting and installing projector headlights is SO much better than stock, I did NOT think it would be that huge of a difference. Oh boy how I was wrong!

Thanks to peugoby again and AussieDan for the GT-B bilstein struts and the GT-B Tein S-Tech springs! Those will be finished with KYB tophats and boots and probably put on, with some help from friends, around spring break. I will be purchasing whiteline front and rear anti-sway bars and endlinks for the suspension upgrade too. They will go on at the same time. Also pictured are new winter wheels! Got the snowflakes off ebay from a totaled subie and the tires from a local goodyear shop. It's november and it's still 60 degrees outside so no need for the winter setup yet!!
I've also been going to local subaru meets every first wednesday of the month recently which has really been fun. Anyone else in the Des Moines area is welcome to join. Now looking for side and rear legacy wagon lips to go with the front. Time to start searching the junkyards!

I know "s-techs" are bad and can blow struts but I thought that was only for WRX/sti s-techs, the spring rate is crappy for stock struts. I've read forums that say s-techs are fine on other kinds of cars. Would it make any difference that it was made in Japan for a japan specific car (GT-B)? I just don't want to blow struts here. If I'm not going to with the strut/spring combo I have here then I think I'll just leave it alone as I'm going to get a big handling difference going from stock L struts to bilstein struts.
Anyone else with input on this please chime in...

If I'm not going to with the strut/spring combo I have here then I think I'll just leave it alone as I'm going to get a big handling difference going from stock L struts to bilstein struts.
Anyone else with input on this please chime in...
A friend of mine has the S-Tech's on his P-10 Infiniti G20 with KYB GR2-s. It rides pretty nicely. WRX S-Techs on a Legacy however is supposed to ride like poop. I'm sure Japanese made Tein's will ride pretty nicely. If you hate them I have some AT GT wagon springs I got from Plays_With_Toy's a while back.

Yeah the front lip is a stock lip that came on 1996 legacy gt's or a 95 LSI i believe?? This was before they moved on to the newer style bumper with the bigger grill and non removable lip.
Thanks toby, i remember the other springs now! keep them around just in case!
The springs are made for a GT-B wagon.. so do you think my wagon will be funky like your when you put on the bilstein springs?? front end slightly raised higher than the back because the springs were meant to handle a heavier turbo engine??? Just got me thinkin...

Car died on the way to work :-(
The ScanGauge voltage meter took a nosedive while going 70. Things started shutting down to keep the engine going. Gauges and lights first, then heater, then radio. Drove with nothing on for about a minute. Car started to bog down and couldn't keep the speed. Coasted into a nearby rest stop. I shut it off, and couldn't start it again.
I think it's the alternator, the check battery light came on the night before and it would explain the weird whining sound I've heard from the front of the car.

So this winter has been hell for this car.
1. The alternator WAS the problem and was replaced.
2. Took out the right rear DIY mudflap the other day, it was so cold and brittle the mudflap just bent back and broke. Made 2 perfect circles where the bolts were...
3. I have NO parking lights. Headlights, taillights, turn signals, and reverse lights are fine. I just can't drive around at night because my rear end is blacked out, no license plate lights, rear parking lights, no front amber lights, and no fogs because I have them wired into the parking lights. I'm thinkin it's a switch or it's grounded somewhere it's not supposed to be creating a short.
On a happier note I forgot to mention I have acquired the side skirts and rear lip for my car! Just need paint and they're going on this spring with the suspension.
Sorry to hear about alternator and the wiring lights issue. It sounds like you have a bad ground somewhere but shouldn't be too bad to fix, just have to find it lol... But car is comming along nicely cant wait to see side skirts and rear lip on the car and see it sitting lower, btw love the color very rare color.

Yeah its kinda lame, but I have my car working now! Well, sorta... It's the switch for the parking lights, some of the contacts are loose and are sucking it up!!! Now the parkings lights are wired to come on with the headlights. So basically it's all the lights or nothing. New wheel bearing makes the car SO smooth on the interstate now also.

It just sucks, I really don't wanna drill into the car and there's no template. I don't have all the hardware either.

Yeah I've done the DIY twice now, I had some sort of thick cloth with vinyl over it.. TOO thick, the folds didn't look good so that's why I changed it to a much thinner cloth. I got mine on ebay!!! I'd recommend it if you can't find what you're looking for locally.
Still haven't gotten my suspension or exhaust things on yet :-(
I did NOT redo the DIY mud flaps either, just using the same ones.
Today Me and RHD in Iowa, well mostly him lol, installed a keyless entry/remote start/alarm system on the car. ME LIKELY!
Also replaced the possibly not faulty parking light switch in the steering column. 2 of the wires were not even connected anymore, almost like they burned off
We also drilled in the side skirts today, the tape would definitely NOT hold long term. Bought the hardware from a local O'Reilly's store. (I can take pics of what we used if anyone wants.)
THE PLAN is to install the built struts and RSB on monday. UNinstall the headers to be painted and rewrapped, then painted again. Install the stock headers in the mean time.
Get an alignment, definitely need to do this anytime you mess with suspension stuff...
Maybe thursday or friday install the improved headers with the new cat.
Oh yeah another thing, filled up on gas today, got around 25 mpg... :smt017 It used to get about 20ish. The car is fixing itself???

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/06/IMG_0674-1.jpg
Went to O'Reilly's and picked these up for like 2 bucks. These went on the sides. Just slip them onto the skirts, mark where they meet the metal and DRILL! The hole should be a little smaller than these thingers so they kinda snap in place. You could use a little primer where you drill so reduce the risk of rust.
AND NOW>>>>>LOWERED! Like ridiculously lowered, like S-TECH lowered.

Actually turned out pretty well. No rubbing, didn't expect it tho with 205/45/R17's. Pretty even from front to back. Ride quality is BOUNCY! I think I like it? My friend Justin said that it could be compared to coilovers possibly. Kinda want a before and after pic, but I think it was about a 1.5-2inch drop all around. I also think I can see how s-techs could be really sucky, paired with the bilsteins tho, pretty sure its way better than wrx stock struts with s-techs.
I didn't get the RSB on :( Gonna get some METAL endlinks first, instead of using the stock PLASTIC ones. And I'll probably get the cat on then too.
Also gonna let the T-storms go through today and tomorrow, wash the car then take actual pictures, also get a JOB lol

I got lucky with the skirts, xXGTBspecXx was parting out his car at the perfect time. And I might swap out the springs near the end of summer vacation. I LOVE how low my car is. Your bilsteins definitely help the handling so much. Just a bit bouncy... Kinda feels like my idea of coilovers tho... idk... I'll have to think about it.

SOOOooooo..... Used the struts bump stops today. COMPLETELY forgot about a set of train tracks that SUCK. The left rear strut is messed up or something. The nut that puts the whole strut assembly was loose and it won't tighten down again. It's supposed to be a self locking nut. It looks like the threads for that nut are about a half inch higher than the other rear strut. But the threads don't look bent or damaged so I'm not sure what exactly happened. I'm taking a look at it tomorrow.
I can still drive on it since it still has the car's weight to keep it from flying apart.
Also got the RSB and the high flow cat on barely!! FYI random tech high flow cats do NOT fit auto trannies. We did get it to fit on there but its making contact with the transmission at all times because the AT is much wider than the MT. And I actually think I liked my car better a little quieter. The new single cat added a bit of a rally car sound to it. I might take it off....
The RSB and whiteline endlinks are awesome!!! Got a rock solid back end now, except for this bottoming out thing... :-(
Just because of this I'm thinking about getting different springs. I found some H&R springs, any other suggestions??

So THANKFULLY nothing broke. But BOTH rear strut nuts were loose??? Couldn't hand tighten them down, had to use my friends air compressor tools and then its all good! Not sure whether they were slowly wiggling off, the impact made them loose, or a combination of both which I think it is, but its all fixed now! :smt023
The louder exhaust is growing on me... If there are no ill effects from the contact of the transmission and the cat then I might keep it.

I think I like it because the chrome finish matches the wheels and the little strip that goes along the windows. So I'll keep it for a while at least. What do you think?
I like how my front lip is ALMOST touching the parking lot curb thingy. Even with the lowering springs I still have a good amount of clearance.
Here's the RSB and the shiney gold endlinks. Is it just me or is my RSB hanging down a bit lower than it should??? It's not like it's installed wrong. I can tell there's an improvement in handling around corners. Oh wait, is it just because my car is lowered a bit??

Yeah so, never thought I would, but I did! Went to an autocross event in Marshalltown, IA. The local Mustang Club rents out an old go-kart track once a month and hosts an autocross event during the summer. My subaru friends convinced me to try it out! It wasn't like a usual autocross because there were no cones, just the track with rumble strips and everything! It was awesome. We had 1 warmup lap and then 2 race laps.

The car handled pretty well, I've never squealed my wheels this much so it was a great experience. I definitely put those S-techs to the TEST! And, eh, they work... The s-tech with bilstein combo gives it almost a coilover feel on bumps while still giving in a bit to the curb weight of the car on tight turns. Still way better than stock tho. I think I hit about 50mph on the straightaway furthest from the finish line, right before the S-curves.
Navi271
08-01-2010, 03:32 AM
Ok, here's the deal. S-techs are still not the best even from japan. I know, I know! Shoulda known before I bought them, ANYWAYS...
Here's whats been happening. I've spruced up the engine bay a bit. It now has some blue, red, and yellow on a few parts. The engine bay is the ONLY place that will have these colors, they will be hiding under the hood! I deleted the oil catch can too... I've also rewrapped the headers. Good thing too, because the old wrap was in tatters and was holding junk and crap from a year of driving in them! It was nasty! AND when they came off, it was like they had been on there for decades! Intense dust! So now I painted the headers, wrapped them, then painted the wrap with DEI silicone paint to "seal it." We'll see how they hold up this winter.
I took off the high flow cat too, put the stock cats back on. The rattle from the high flow cat against the auto transmission was stupid, I'm glad it's gone. There's a mark on the cat right where it was rattling. The cats got the same treatment as the high flow cat and the headers. Paint, wrap, seal...
NEXT is to take off the s-techs! (yay!) and replace them with stock LGT springs, paired with the bilsteins. I want to raise my car back up because now that I've driven Iowa streets in a lowered car, I've realized these streets SUCK! And plus winters here suck. I don't want to experience them in my lowered subie. I will miss the lowered feel, but the springs were just too damn soft! I also have a set of rally armors next to me and some LED lights for the little light in the projector headlights, trunk light, license plate lights, and maybe side markers.
THEN me and a friend get to do some engine gaskets!!!! oh FUN and JOY! The ones I see leaking are the valve gaskets, definitely the rear main seal, could have a sensor leaking too. The exhaust got all new gaskets too.
This all gets done before school starts on the 23rd! So enough with this novel I'm writing, expect some change in direction with this car, and some pictures.
EDIT: Obviously I didn't get this all done before the 23rd when school started.
The schedule: <--I'll update this until it's all done!
Spruce up engine bay (DONE)
Redo headers (DONE)
Replace stock cats (DONE)
Replace s-techs with L springz?? Yeah decided to go back to stock (DONE)
Install rally armors (DONE)
Install LED lights (DONE)

Thanks everyone!!
Everything is done! Now for an alignment...
So after weeks of thinking I decided on going back to my stock L springs. Why you ask? My old springs are actually in pretty good condition, and I also wanted to take apart the old struts to get the OEM front strut mounts I had because my KYB's crapped out on me. My car is now high, like really high! Comparing it to some old pics the car is about the same height off the ground as it was without the GT lip stuff on the car. Those lips added like 1/2 to 1inch of "lowering." The wheel gap is kinda extreme. You'll just have to see it in the pics that will be up soon. It looks only slightly funny since I have those low profile tires on. Next set of tires I'll have to get at least 215's instead.
Basically you can say I pulled a Benfolio! Stock to Lowered to Raised!
Why is my car higher than stock if it's using stock springs? It's the bilsteins! We found when we took apart the old struts that 2 of them were toast. They were riding lower and crappier than they did in '95. The bilsteins are stiff and tough, so they take a lot more of the car's weight off the springs than the stockers did. Now I'm ready to drive over any stupid bump I find! or rock... or boulder... or snow, can't wait for it!
Rallyarmors for the 93-01 impreza DO work for our cars. Just need to make new mounting points. Only 1 of the 3 mounting points worked with the fronts. The rears were lucky, 2 of the 3 worked. Easy to do, and looks great now. Better than the DIY ones... just sayin. (For the price they better be!)
I need to get pics of all the stuff! I've been debating it because my car is dirty, but what the hell? I'll get around to it maybe tomorrow!

Tried to get rid of some rust on the right rear quarter panel too, we'll see how long that lasts...

Hey everyone. The car still runs good, and just past 139,900 miles yesterday.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/10/IMG_10541-1.jpg
Just a few things:
- Old grill is back on atm. My emblem cracked in half on the stock one. Anyone have a spare emblem I can "borrow"?
- I LOVE how high it sits now. I can get under my car in some places without stands! I'm pretty skinny tho...
- The rims in this pic could possibly be for sale if anyone is interested.

Yeah, it's weird how things work out in the end. I'm really happy with how it is right now, and the good thing is I don't NEED a drop, at least not right now (I was driving over curbs the other night), which gives me a lot of time to find that "perfect" drop. Thanks!

Well, I really like it. Still has a good sound, but not annoying like the old SRI. WOT seems better now, and I'll have to drive it around a bit more, but it seems like the little hesitation i'd get slowly accelerating is not there as much anymore. This is all going from feel tho. I also reset the car (unhooked the battery) so the computer could learn the new intake. The snorkus was a pain to put back in and was the hardest part of the install. But I wish I could drive a car with a stock intake on it, then with the hybrid just to see if I could tell a difference between SRI to Hybrid compared to Stock to Hybrid.

Cool, I'd definitely recommend it! I just had to do a little cutting because the tube I had to buy to extend the length of the SRI was a little too long. I just used a dremel and some patience to cut the tube.

205/45/R17, they're pretty thin. Also the rims themselves have always been a little too flashy for me, too much chrome. I like the 16's because they aren't as harsh on bumps, and they don't stand out as much. They suit my needs as a poor college student lol.

The seats were fun, the drivers seat, left track/rail was bent in an accident. A friend and I took it completely apart and bent it back so it's straight and true. Had to buy some locker washers and bolts for the seat belts to be secured on. Bolt size was a standard 7/16" - 20TPI, got from Home Depot.
Next week is spring break! That means I get to do some maintenance work on the car. Both the front cam gaskets are bad and leaking. One or both of the belts are squeakin too. Otherwise the car is great, I freaking love it. It's almost perfect as my DD. All I need now is a few more handling upgrades, a little more power, and possibly more brake power.

New Belts and new cam seals. The car is running well.
It's at a kinda awkward midlife crisis or teenage point of its life. I have the 14" steelies back on because these are the only all seasons I own atm, and I have to say I really enjoy the black rims with black trim. Still somewhat lifted as well. I'm pretty sure I'm going to lower it again. Question is what springs to use? I'm thinking about:
JDM Tein S-Tech (specifically made for these struts)
H&R
King Low
Whiteline Control
From what I've seen the S-Techs are about as low as H&R's. If I want a slight drop I'd get the Kings or Whitelines. Might not be able to find them or afford them tho.

I ended up going with STI springs somehow, which was not something I was considering at first. Use WRX top hats too, with the Bilstein struts. So far I love the results. These are the springs I should have gotten in the beginning. They are the stiffest spring I've ever had on my car, and they handle quite well. More info on this is in this thread: https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=21576

Oh hey sorry I didn't see this.
I got mine on ebay, you just gotta search "8239 MSD Coil." I got the correct plug for it from a member on here, he doesn't sell them anymore tho. You can find one in a junkyard for a dodge neon, as mentioned above. I used the DIY on here, it was really helpful! I think there's actually 2 separate DIY threads.

Just a tiny update! sti spring and bilstein strut combo is still working well, as I plan on using this as a permanent suspension setup through all 4 seasons.
I put in some rubber spring spacers exactly like the ones "2.5GT" used. There are not many places to put these into the sti springs because there just aren't many coils. The spring also doesn't compress that much either under the full load of the car. But this is what it looks like now, with the rear slightly higher.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/07/IMG_2339-1.jpg
Almost exactly the same, but if you look at the angle of the sideskirt, it is at a smaller angle than the last picture, and it looks more even from front to back.
Also, took my car to another car show, and I wanted to show off the primary colored primary engine! lol, so I cleaned the crap out of it, even cleaned the underside of the hood.

what did you use to get your TS-R badges on?
It was heavy duty 3M double sided sticky tape. It was the molding tape, so it could form into the grooves on the back of the badge for better hold. Got it at autozone I think. I used an exacto knife and cut the tape out so it fit almost perfectly behind every letter of the badge so no part of it will want to come off. It's not going anywhere, and it's survived many high pressure washes.

Been doin a lot of thinking lately about this car...
I'm pretty much dead set on getting coilovers now. Ever since I put on the STi springs I've been wanting moar low! And to get the wheel gaps perfect. I even thought about putting the Tein springs I still have back on, but then remembered how soft they were. I want the car lower and the springs stiffer, so coilovers is likely where I'll be going.
I might be getting my hands on a 2.5L! Someone replaced the headgaskets by themselves and couldn't get any compression afterward. My friend has it now and if we can get it working it'll probably end up in my car!
Of course, this will all be happening if I have enough cash. I'm graduating this spring and I gotta save up in case I'm moving out somewhere far, far away. I suppose I can dip into some savings if I really want to afford a new engine and coilovers. Not sure if it's worth it, or even if the engine will work or not.
If the 2.5L does work out I'd also plan on getting:
Coilovers - Tein Flex?
Whiteline FSB and endlinks
Hella Horns
Yellow the fogs
Rear wiper mod, and maybe replace fronts with the newer versions as well since they're still rusting.
If the 2.5L doesn't work out I'll be seriously thinking about saving up money for a while and then selling this car to make room for something better. I've always wanted an H6 or maybe a newer impreza or legacy with at least a 2.5L.
Everyone here in central Iowa is pissed because it's almost January and we still haven't had any snow. It's going to be 50 degrees outside tomorrow and I'm planning to re-aim my headlights and fog lights, and possibly adjust the rubber spring spacers in the rear.

We haven't even had any rain! Seriously, it's winter, where's the snow?! The 10 day forecast has sun, some clouds, and an average of 40 degrees for the high. Pretty crazy.
Adjusted the lights and the fog lights. Maybe a little too much actually, I think I need the headlights a little higher. The fog lights sucked tho! Completely stripped one of the adjuster thingers so it's not going anywhere now. I also changed up the rubber spring spacers as well, I'll try to take a picture in the light tomorrow.

So as much as I love the STi springs on my car right now, I think I'm going to buy some H&R springs and some 3/8 Paranoid Fabrications saggy butt spacers. I'd like to get the trunk net thing for wagons, a smaller subwoofer box and relocate it to a different location to anchor it. I also need to work on the leaky engine, tho it seems like the cold temps have slowed the oil leaks, I still have a leak at the PS pump gasket. Maybe I'll do a few other important things like getting the transmission and diffs flushed, new timing belt, water pump, fuel filter, and replace some miscellaneous gaskets. Coming up on 150K and it would be nice to have a lot of this taken care of before I graduate!

If you go back to page 3 about mid way through the page I talked about what I used. I used a combo of self taping screws on the underside and body panel retainers on the sides. You also might be able to get the OEM hardware from a dealer.
And sadly I don't have an STi muffler :-( That's the SPT muffler meant for for a 2.5GT legacy, but I believe the diameter of an STi exhaust is about 2 1/4 inches.

I should update this. I got a few new things.
In the engine bay:
- Duralast Gold Battery
- Cleaned IACV (Here's an awesome DIY --> http://www.weidefamily.net/vanagon/HTML/06a/02/slideshow.html)
- Lucid Grounding Kit
- Deleted Oil Catch Can
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/IMG_2758-1.jpg
In the trunk:
- Smaller Subwoofer Box
- Mounted to wood trunk flooring
- OEM Legacy Wagon Cargo Net
- No more Rear Strut Bar...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/02/IMG_2757-1.jpg
I also bought some 3/8" Paranoid Fabrications Saggy Butt Spacers and H&R Sport Springs!
Sadly the other day I got an email from the distributor I bought the H&R springs from and they said they're back ordered until March 16th! Not cool... But I'm getting an 8% discount because of the back order. So hopefully I'll be lower again soon!

Why the catch can delete?

Yeah! I hear things like that all time from other people who install grounding kits. Maybe I should pay attention more lol.
Deleted catch can because I noticed the gaskets on the inlet and outlet ports were cracked and already leaky. You don't NEED one, as long as I put some cleaner stuff in the fuel every once in a while it should be fine. I only get blow by on start up. The engine bay looks less cluttered without it too.

Well it's time for the 150k maintenance service on this car and I bought a crap ton of stuff today.
Gates TCK254 Timing Belt Component Kit
Gates T43204 Tensioner
Gates 42207 Water Pump + Gasket
Oil Pan
Cam Seals
Cam Seal O Rings
Crank Seal
Oil Pump Gasket
Valve Cover Gaskets
Rear Main Seal
Updated Rear Cover Plate w/ Screws
PCV Valve
Intake Manifold Gaskets
Fuel Filter
Power Steering Reservoir Gasket
Going to flush the Brake, Transmission and Differential fluid soon.
I also got a Stromung Legacy Mid Pipe. Correct size and everything, but I couldn't get the bolts from the mid pipe to the muffler off so I'll have to try again some other time.

Self gasket sealant? hmm, ok I'll have to ask my friend who's helping me with this. I don't have the tools to take the engine out to get to the rear main and such, so he helps me out a lot!
I'm paying a little over $500 for this mix of OEM and Gates stuff. You probably won't have to do your oil pan, or wait, do you? Did you figure out what drained all the oil out of your car? Anyways, if you don't get the oil pan it's about $100 less than that. Crazy expensive oil pan...

Oh awesome, that will help, thanks! Sucks about the oil pan tho. So is your car just camping out until you find time to get a new oil pan on?
I'm taking about another gasket tho, it's actually called a oil pump O ring or something. It's a gasket you can only see when you take the oil pump off. It's a small round one too, I'm thinking like the size of a quarter.

Took some stuff apart. Decided to not take the oil pump off because the crank sprocket didn't want to come off easily, and I didn't want to go buy or rent a remover tool for it. It's not leaking so if it's not broken, then don't fix it! Also the rust on the oil pan wasn't as bad as I thought it was, still replaced it though.

Wow! it runs so much better!!! All the leaks are gone, there were many exhaust and intake leaks. It just runs a lot smoother. There is a little bit more rumble in the exhaust with the new mid pipe but not much, which I was expecting. I may get a new axleback someday to be a bit louder.
Only problems we ran into was a leak in the EGR tube that connects to the intake manifold. That thing is pointless and annoying... Also the thermostat did not want to open. After testing it and seeing that it does still work, we put it back in and it worked fine. I'll be keeping my eye on the temp gauge.

Apparently I'm leaking coolant.
At first I thought it was coming from the lower hose, which is brand new. It was tight and checked out ok. I believe it's either the T-stat gasket or the plastic housing. I've read some stories about aftermarket T-stat gaskets, so now I'm pretty sure that is the problem. It just sucks because I gotta drain all the new fluid back out and try to reuse it. Just annoying. It's not leaking enough to affect my driving around town, I just need to keep a watch on the coolant level and fill it up a little each day.
I'll get that done on Saturday and I'll try to take pictures.
Check the crossover pipe just under your IM too, my old EJ22 was leaking there.

I went out to my car today to find this...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/04/IMG_0044-1.jpg
LAME! Threw a wrench into my plans today. It seems overnight the thermostat gasket just let loose. Zac, I did check it just to make sure, but it was definitely coming from that plastic water pump inlet pipe. My radiator was almost empty. So with help from a friend, I got all the parts and stuff I needed and changed the gasket, and the thermostat since I was taking it out anyway, in an unused part of the parking lot of my apartment building.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/04/IMG_0045-2.jpg
Simple to do, funny to do not in a driveway or garage tho.
The most annoying part is that I didn't get the clamp for the lower radiator hose on correctly, it drips every once in a while under pressure... I'll fix that tomorrow. And before you ask, I'm sure it's not still leaking from the same place. I double and triple checked it and the coolant is not coming from above the lower radiator hose anymore.

Navi271
04-16-2012, 11:59 PM
LOL, it was a bit weird doing that in the parking lot. I got some funny looks.
First off, after discovering I was still leaking coolant in the exact same place, I decided to buy all new OEM thermostat, gasket, and lower radiator hose. Well the second time doing this I noticed that there's a little hose just above where the lower radiator hose connects to the thermostat housing (the radiator hose completely blocks this from view). The clamp to secure that little hose was not on. :smt021 Looks like we forgot to put that clamp on when we put the engine back in. Fixed that, and so far so good.
I recently got new H&R Sport Springs in the mail, thanks Reason! With help from a friend and a wall mounted spring compressor they are now on the car and in a strange turn of events I now have 17" ASA wheels with brand new Continental's, 225/something/R17. Traded my WRX wheels and tires straight up. It's not a final trade yet, but I think I'm going to keep them. Here are some pics:
Pre-settled H&R springs.

Subaru party!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/04/IMG_0112-1.jpg
My impressions of the setup thus far is, this is definitely what I should have gone with at the very beginning. The H&R springs handle similarly to the STi springs that were previously on the car. The H&R's are slightly more comfy on bumps tho. The car is level now front to back unlike it was with the STi springs. I also put in 1/4th inch saggy butt spacers in the rear just from what I saw with others that had these springs on wagons. I thought the springs would put me even lower, to the point that my RallyArmors would be touching the ground. Actually it seems like it's only about an inch lower from where the STi spring height was. I'm wondering if this is because of the wheels and tires. I thought for sure the tires would rub and they do in the rear, but only on very hard cornering, like autocross cornering not daily driving. The fender didn't dig into the tires, but just left marks of where it made contact. That can be easily fixed. Oh, did I mention that these new wheels and tires are lighter than the wrx wheels and tires I traded them for?! I think I got a pretty good deal on them. One of the wheels is missing a center cap tho.
We'll see if the car settles more, which I'm sure it will, but I'm not sure by how much. Well what do you think? Should I keep the new wheels and tires?

Give the H&R a few weeks to settle since they have to compress and decompress with the weight. Ive been running them for that long and have seem them get better over time.

Just some cheap mods that would really set it off.

It's all stuff I'll take into consideration, thanks again for the feedback. And now to show you guys a few little things I've done to the car that I've been wanting to do for a while now.
Spent some money and got a new front license plate bracket and a flat black license plate frame for the rear because I got new plates. I wasn't expecting new plates so they are not personalized.

Seeing the black frame on the rear makes me wonder how a black tailgate handle would look instead of the chrome...
Fog lights tinted yellow, and I put the old new grill back on. I keep going back and forth on stock or aftermarket and I can't decide! The aftermarket one looks awesome but doesn't fit like OEM. The stock one fits perfectly, matches the chrome already on the car, but it's STOCK. What do you guys think?

I quite like the black, red, chrome, glass combo. It gives your car nice contrast and I feel they break up the space nicely. I like just a hint of chrome to make it shine, not so that it's over powering. And I feel your car does it very nicely.

Fogs look good in yellow! I also like those wheels - they're a good fit with the car.
Purchase a JDM L7 grill with the green badge & smoked chrome. In my opinion that'd look best and give enough contrast for everything else going on with the front end. Just a suggestion but what'd really set it off is if you painted the tail gate bar a medium finish black and the chrome side strips along the bottom of the windows. Then you wouldn't have this chrome dilemma anymore & it'd look more aggressive.

The plastidip is holding up just fine. Someone else I know has a plastidipped grill as well. It felt different though, so when I asked him about it he said it's a couple years old. It made sense. It felt like the sticky soft-ness of the rubber was gone, but it was also holding up just fine.

Hmm, what's that by the fuel door in the last picture? Rust is taking over the passenger side rear wheelwell so I'm just trying to slow it down. No stopping it unless it's cut out and replaced with good metal. I decided that instead of just covering it up, I'd embrace it and try a radical paint idea I've had. I don't know how long the sticker will stay as I sometimes love stickers and sometimes hate them. They don't usually last long on my car before I want to rip them off.

Just experimenting with deleting the roof rack.
How it is now:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/09/IMG_9581_zpsdd749079-1.jpg
So now I'm looking at getting rid of those 3 strips on the roof. I'm just not sure I'd like to have ALL of those screws sticking up out of my roof. They don't show that bad on the photos though.
With strips:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/09/IMG_9574_zpsf97fd21d-1.jpg
Without strips:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/09/IMG_9568_zps0bf271d7-1.jpg
Looks awesome without. However there are also some color changes in the paint and wear marks where the strips used to be.

Giggity... LOL. Who else but Quagmire?!
And now I'm thinking I might want to start biking again and get a bike carrier for my roof rack, which means I need to put it back on.
Well long story short the passenger side rail has no more threads in the roof for the very first bolt, which makes that rail stick up in the front catching a ton of air. I guess 3 other bolts are secure on there, but it's just enough of an excuse to say if I want to get bike carriers, I'll probably get Thule feet, loading bars and a fairing. I've always liked how aftermarket racks look.
If I do decide to get rid of the plastic bars still on my roof, I'll probably do a similar paint job as Ampped88's car. (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=23736) <--Click to see

be careful with those aftermarket racks. my brother has those Thule's on his 96 BK L and they have dented his roof where they are attached.

hmm, that would suck! And actually i put the side rails back on today. The problem was the piece that's welded onto the underside of the roof with the threads for the bolt to connect the roof rack to the roof broke off. I just used a washer, a nut, unattached part of the headliner and some other interior pieces and finally got it all together with the side rail fully secured to the roof!
I decided to take the time to get those side rails back on because I was looking at your car, plus a few others on here, to see what you were doing with your roof rack. Your car looks great with just the side rails so that's what I'm going to go with for now!

Your wagon is awesome.
It's good that you've kept it in excellent condition over the years.
I have questions for you.
How is that MSD still holding up? I just installed mine not too long ago & I can definitely feel the increase in power all over the rpm range.
Does that intake filter get dirty often? I've been wanting to go for the CAI of that kind but haven't gotten around to it.

The MSD coil is still awesome, and I've had zero problems with it since installing it. I just double checked, wow it's been 3 years!
I actually went almost back to stock with a hybrid intake and I don't check that one ever. The short ram intake I had, I would clean it probably about every season. So about 4 times a year, probably less and it seemed fine. And definitely go CAI instead of short ram. Short ram intakes like to get heat soaked. CAI you only have to worry about rain getting in it since it's closer to the ground.

Hey dude! Figured I'd come show some love. I love that beach towel rack on the hatch, I don't know if I could rock it, but I really do love it!
Do you utilize your DRLs? If so, did your black-out job affect them at all?
I may be biased, but I really love our cars with naked roofs. Ruuves. Roofies. Top part. Sans roof rails.
That said, I have a Yakima set with the thick rubber feet, and they didn't move a millimeter for 4 months. If you do put aftermarket racks on, I'd advise you to take them off once a month or so and clean where they sit. I'm a bit anal though :).
I maybe, possibly could be separated from my roof racks for the right price. Not sure yet though.
Edit: Actually, I have two Yakima racks. One is a rail-grabber system I got from Wiscon_Mark. I'd let that one go for real, real cheap.

^hey man. You mean my bed, bath and beyond handicap bar?! ahaha, I get a lot of crap from my friends for it, but I love it as well.
I don't have any true DRL's. Never did. I did tape off some of the chrome behind all the lights other than the projectors, and the brights reflector is a separate piece that I didn't paint. I have the corner lights and the jdm "city" lights wired into the parking lights. The light from those isn't much affected from the blackout.
If I do decide to get a new roof rack I'll go straight to you first! I'm still not using my roof rack for anything yet. I may this summer though, I know it's a long way away but that's my plan so far.
UPDATE: It's nice to know my car hates getting up early in the cold morning as much as I do. Got myself some hella horns for Christmas, already installed. Also got a free set of Whiteline front endlinks from a friend. Should be getting a used Whiteline FSB soon or I'll pick up Huffer's Tribeca one if it's still available.
I've been thinking about buying the Stromung axleback from boxer4racing, OR I may pick up that Genome exhaust on ebay when I get my next paycheck. Not sure...

For the hose make sure you either get a Subaru one or confirm the size with the original if it's an aftermarket one. Bad a shop do this exactly hose and started to get temp spikes and then the heater wouldn't work. Turns out they used an aftermarket on that needs to be trimmed to fit right. It was too long an kinking in the middle.
Navi271
04-27-2013, 12:05 PM
^Oh yes, it was definitely trim to fit, and I compared it to the original Subaru one to get it close to perfect. It's actually been installed for a while now with no problems. I'll give it a double check while I'm under the car today anyways.
^^I agree the license plate bracket is worth the money! Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it lol, but I was sick of accidentally bending the front license plate. That won't happen anymore with the bracket.
I'll be under the car because as some of you know, my radiator cracked right at the plastic coupler for the upper radiator hose, the lower one could have a slight crack as well. I'm going to pick up a new radiator right now!

Spent some money on a new Stromung Axleback! This is an SPT Axleback to Stromung Axleback comparison. This makes a complete Stromung catback on my car, and it sounds amazing! I may need a resonator someday, or at least some sound deadening in the trunk.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/06/IMG_9818_zps2c7fe1e7-1.jpg
Also got a hold of some free Whiteline front endlinks and a used FSB. This tightened up the whole front end. There was a large difference between this and stock.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/06/IMG_9834_zpsda0239a3-1.jpg
However not all was fun and games. My brakes started being weird and squeaky. Here's some funky wear on the back of the driver's side front rotor and brake pad.

...and then my radiator exploded...

After replacing the radiator and hoses and then ordering new brake parts, on May 3rd and 4th central Iowa got a bit of snow

- 04 LGT Raybestos Front Calipers/Brackets/Rotors (FRC11607/8)(980141R)
- Centric StopTech F/R Brake Pads (30909290/7700)
- 02 WRX Raybestos Rear Calipers (FRC11145/6) (Thanks Regardie)
- 04 Legacy Cardone Rear Brackets (14-1605) (Thanks again Regardie)
- 04 Legacy Raybestos Rear Rotors (96937R) (And again Regardie)
- Techna-Fit SS brake lines (SUB-1105CL) (And one big final thanks to Regardie)

I went to a friends garage and we installed all the new brake stuff! The install took a whole day, and of course I was too focused to snap any pictures. Here is the new front driver's side though. The car stops quite nicely now.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/06/IMG_9882_zps3bc8856b-1.jpg
Then after one rainstorm the calipers/rotors started to rust horribly. Apparently OEM replacement parts have to meet only the bare minimum in manufacture standards, and that does not include a rust inhibiting coat of any sort. Here's a pic of things mostly taken apart. This caliper got it the worst in terms of rust.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/06/IMG_9927_zps4689f9b4-1.jpg
So then I painted everything. Dupli-color brush on caliper paint (silver) for the calipers and spray on (semi gloss black) for the rotors. Here's the rear driver's side rotor complete and back together.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/06/IMG_9925_zpsc13fc5fd-1.jpg

Hey thanks! No snow in June yet, yeah no kidding... It's been crappy recently, kinda cold.
Dallas isn't in Ames this summer so we lost our ames garage. :-( Unless Scott has an install party we may have to just install stuff in an apartment parking lot or possibly you could come out here to the farm house. We'll figure something out.

No worries, not your fault at all. I had thought about painting them before installing, but I always told myself the rust couldn't be, and won't be that bad... but now I know for any future brake modifications, I'll paint before installing.
Everything went together flawlessly! No grinding down of alignment tabs for the brake lines or anything. It was like all the brake parts were made for a 95 legacy. Thanks again!
