I bet it's pretty simple. Cool concept though, I'd get them if they were cheaper.

The OEM cold weather package includes a heated windshield where the wipers park.

Might be cheaper, easier to just heat the washer fluid?

Easier to simply park with your blades raised off the glass... hence no freezing, then while driving just have the front defrost on...

Have You ever spent a winter in Mn.?
Driving with the defrost on wont always keep the blades from freezing.

It's common practice to reach out the window as the wiper passes the pillar, lifting it quickly, and letting it snap back onto the windshield to clear the ice off it.

I dunno if even heated fluid would be truly effective. But You could heat a lot of fluid for the cost of one replacement wiper.

Yeah I have that button, but not the OEM windshield anymore. Doesn't work unfortunately.

Never spent a winter in Maine, don't plan on it either!

I was just thinking about this heated washer fluid - you could run a coolant line around the bottle and that would heat it up pretty quick?

I have always found that the rear defrost is super-effective...I can start the car, flip the rear defrost on, get out, scrape the front glass, walk to the back and the snow is sliding off the rear already. Only takes a minute or two.

I agree with the rear defrost.. my forester had the cold weather package but the front wiper deicers took too long and it was just quicker to clean it off by hand.

the funny thing was like 3 years after owning the car one morning when dew was out I found out I had heated out door mirrors they come on when you turn on the front defrost.

A cool concept, but a waste of time and money. 2 mins with the ice scraper and I'm fine till I'm back home. I'm not waiting for these things to melt snow or ice, I'm not that lazy

i know it happens but i've never seen it, i've seen the inside of a windsheild ice over while driving in a van that the heater fan had died in

Haha I never had that problem. It probably snows more where you are than here. A combo of the front defroster and rainx works good in snow storms.

This is why I'm glad i live in Washington, you only have to deal with this once or twice a year, plus all the times you go up to the mountains. Gotta love coming down from 60" fresh snow at Mt. Baker down to a nice cool 50 degree day in Bellingham. It rarely gets cold enough to snow and when it does it's cause there is no chance of snow (completely clear).

These do seem like a pretty cool idea, i would consider it if i end up turning into a ski bum and never come down from the mountains.

Zedhead - I think you got a good idea about heating the WWF bottle. I bet even with the wipers heated, the snow would build up and we'd still have to reach out and snap the wipers.

Reason - You must be really close to the coast in RI to never get build up.

I hate getting stuck in traffic during a snow storm, keeping rolling down the window, pick up the wiper as it goes by and give it a lift to slap it onto the windshield. You just know sooner or later that wiper is going to hit the eject button for itself.

I have the winter package and its my first winter with the Subaru, we'll see if it makes a difference.

I was searching ebay for a lower price on the heated blades, and came across a washer fluid heater called Hot Shot, and another offered by JC Whitney.

Doesn't hot anything + ice cold windshield = cold air to the face?

i looked at them till i relaized the wiper blades are heated and not replacable. So that means when the wiper blades start to streak thats another 90.00

I seriously don't think the wiper blades would ever harm anything. The heated fluid???

It was -25 F this AM, I dunno what 100 degree fluid would do at 55 MPH?

Well if you have the slightest bit of a crack started on your windshield it would split almost instantaneously.

Heated fluid only needs to be higher then freezing byt the time it hits the windshield.

Thereis a cheap way of making heated fluid, and thats by extending the washer nozzle line and wrapping it around the heater hose.

Alos if its cold enough, just turning on the deforsters after the car has warmed up can crack a windshield if its going to crack. Heck, they sometimes crack on thier own with no help at all no matter the weather.

nipper

Except when you want them too.

Yeah I know, that's only if you make it warm up quick enough. Heated fluid would only increase the ease and likelihood of that happening.
