Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and love my 2000 5MT Outback Limited. I bought it 2 months ago with 148K and it runs great. However, 5th gear sometimes pops out of gear when I'm on the highway, especially if I'm in cruise control and the car decelerates coming down hills or ramps. I have to physically hold the 5th gear in place, which gets tiresome after 10 miles or so.

I read there's a bolt somewhere that gets loose, but not sure where/what it is? Can anyone arm me with the correct info so I can get this tightened down at a local shop without expensive diagnostic exploration?

Thanks!
Joe

Just 5th gear? sounds like a worn out synchronizer.

*edit

Or some bolt that everyone is talking about.. if it's the bolt the good news is you don't need to crack open the tranny for it.

worn check ball spring or missing ball. 5th and reverse share the same rod. the ball/spring helps keep the car in gear. so thats where to start.

Right - does anyone know the name and specific location of the famous bolt for tightening 5th & reverse without removing the transmission?
