I have been trying to do something similar for months, but not until my buddy Tanner figured out the perfect source of material has it worked as planned:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... ?t=1637585 (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1637585)

ok so i started with 2 $5 black office garbage cans from home depot. i had access to a friends rally armors so i just traced those one but you could do whatever shape you want. all the you need is a razor blade and a heat gun.
i set the rally armors on and traced the pattern using a sharpie.
i then used a heat gun to warm up the razor blade and started to cut. it sliced right through because of the warm blade.
i then marked my holes and drilled them out.
and then i just used zip ties for the time being to mount them up in the existing holes in the rear bumper. and here is how they turned out and so far are holding up really well even with the cold here.
turned out pretty good i think for being made out a garbage can. will post some more pics when the front s are on.
a cheap easy alternate to rally armors only cost me like $11.50 or so for everything.
sorry for the not so great pics.

There are pictures included on the link. Here's how mine turned out:

Excuse the mobile phone photo for now. I based mine off of these JDM STI patterns (http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50). I used the rear patterns for the front and elongated them for the rear. I'll post better pictures in my car's thread in Member's Rides I after I take them.

Stop being lazy and waiting for someone else to do it. Get your butt up and go be our test dummy!

Note that on mine, I just used the original stock mud guards as the template for where to punch the screw holes. The impreza pattern is nowhere close.

Do you have them painted? I was actually gonna buy a set on ebay a few weeks back for like $80 shipped from the UK.. brand new.. but.. i forgot to bid and was at the gym instead.. LOL.. oh well. I probably don't need to be spending that type of money anyways.

So are these a hard plastic or what? I had 18x12 mudflaps on my car for a while, bought at a local parts store for trucks, but my big problem was the scraping noise they made when turning/hitting bumps. I'd much rather grab a rubber set the next time through.

They are a sort of rubberized plastic? They're quite flexible but spring back to shape.

I'm working on these right now using the templates on that site. I have them cut, I just need to find out how I'm going to mount them. Got 2 trash cans for $4 each at The Home Depot and got 2 mud flaps from each one. Not bad!

Okay, so I've got them on, and they look sick, but they're way too long and they scrape EVERYWHERE. I'll get pics up as soon as I get the chance. Gonna take them off and cut them down though.

Why garbage cans? It's winter, why not get black crazy carpets. http://weathermachine.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/crazycarpet.jpg
these are flexable and cheap, you could probably cut 4 flaps from 1 sheet.

two trash cans at home depot- $12
s/s hardware I had lying around-$0
keeping crap off your car with style- priceless
got my "trash flaps" on and they look great. I was able to use the stock little screw plugs in the front, and i used s/s screws in the back. I'll post some pics in a bit.

I'm doing this before the 48 hours of tristate.

Props to the first person who puts a 'rubbermade' label on the flaps.

I was thinking either TRASH FLAPS
or an SLI decal

What is this trash can you guys speak of?

There black home depot trash cans (which are now at 8.00 a can...) . They have a rubbery feel to them that works like flaps when made into them.

The trash cans were about $4 each at Lowe's and I got two mudflaps out of each. I don't know exactly what they were, but they were basically just small household waste bins about 18 inches tall or so maybe. Bolted using custom brackets and washers/nuts/bolts. Took a really long time to mount them the way I wanted, but it only cost about $10 overall, so it was worth it haha.

Honestly, they're just as good as Rally Armors at a much cheaper price. Only thing I will say is they don't dampen the noise very well. When you're driving through a lot of snow or slush, they tend to be pretty loud, but it doesn't really bother me. Kind of a nice noise, knowing that it's hitting my flaps and not my car :D How do you guys like the salt-matched skirts btw?

Doesn't look like it's doing much eh? ..must suck to be where you are with all that salt and snow

WinterKnoll
01-07-2009, 07:43 PM
You do not even understand how much salt they dumped on the roads up here...There's literally about 1/4 inch of salt on the roads. You could scrape it up with your finger. There's enough salt to turn black cars white.

if i started producing these would people buy them? im willing to go to home depot and buy the trash cans and cut themm and all that and once i make one set ill have a template for the next ones. so depending on the price of the materials i need i would either sell them for 15 shipped (if material + shipping is below 15) or 20 shipped (if material + shipping is above 15)

so good idea or not?

WinterKnoll

Sounds like a good idea if you can get the mounting figured out right for the Legacy. I know for me, the cutting was the easy part, but the mounting was a huge bitch.

Mine are still on my car and are working fine. What did you cut them out of?

trash cans. they had some flex but not enough. the roads round here suck something huge so that didnt help any. but they definatly keep the salt off- thats all i care about. i got like almost a half inch on the road-- no joke.

We used the rectangle office cans, like these:

yeah that's what i used, you still have to be careful as the trash cans do have rounded edges. I've had these on my car for the whole summer and they still work great! i can't wait til snow/salt comes so i can really test these things out!

when I made mine over a year ago I just went to the local 4x4 shop and got the leftover material from the "big truck" flaps and cut them in two to make the ones I have on my car. They're really thick and I haven't ever had a problem with them bending back or flapping in the wind, the fronts do scrape when you take a corner to hard but they're never fallen off!

went to IKEA today and picked up the cutting boards.. don't look in the kitchen section lol they just had the white boards that had the large one and the small one..

I had to go down a level and they were hidden in a large basket with three colors.. I was going to pick red but stuck with the black.

So what screws did anyone use?

idk how u guys u did it, but I had a problem taking off my old mud flaps. The bolt and nuts that they were attached to just didn't want to come off thanks to a plastic clip.

Hmm I had no problems.. I was thinking of heading up to IKEA again (was going to today but will tomorrow) to get some more cutting boards but this time in red.

It was stripped so I couldn't unbolt them. I just cut my mud flaps into pieces to get to the clips. I just used a saw to cut the bolts. I made a mess with my bumper and fender holes, but I'm going to order a set of Rally Armor for $15 and make new mounts.
