Well somebody needs to post in this forum, so here it goes:

The victim was my 1998 Legacy 2.5GT Limited with automatic transmission. I swapped over a donor 2005 WRX EJ20, 5MT manual transmission, LSD rear diff, and of course ECU and wiring harness. The project is done for the most part and overall I’m entirely satisfied with the outcome. The power is incredible! I’m running a number of performance upgrades including engine management. The exhaust system is much louder than I had anticipated but on the plus side, with 3” CATless high-flow from the turbo back, the spool-up is very quick with little lag.

Some random pics of the project:

That is amazing...thats what I want my 98 GT to look like under the hood...with a huge STI TMIC! How long did it take you to do the swap? You'll have to give me a step-by-step one of these days on the wiring (when you really dont have anything to do) because I'm hoping by summer time to be swapping something new into mine. Awesome job, any numbers on the power yet? Did you have to get new rear axles for the LSD? What about cooling, did you use the stock radiator and tubing? Details details!!!

Damn... Lost for words...

I've got a friend who is mechanic, and says that he could do the swap for me for FREE (!!!!) but unfortunately I dont have the money to buy new motor... How much was it, anyway?

I can't speak for xcntrk, but I'm collecting pieces to do the same thing, except with JDM power and a JDM 6MT (have). I'm thinking the motor is going to run me $4500+, and thats not counting the wiring I just got for $850.

That doesn't include the 6MT ($3750 shipped).

xcntrk, care to elaborate?

someday....that's what I keep saying when my swap will happen!! I'm just too much of a tightwad to go out and buy everything at once....I've got to search for the deals! Thats how I'm affording it.

IIRC it cost him $5,000, he did it all. thats for the engine, tranny, rear end. LGT-T cross member, ECU & harness. the wiring alone took him around 20 hours, with 2 haynes-style manuals i think.

there is a vid floating around, called onramp fun or something.... yeah.... the swap and MF'in wiring seems worth it to me!!!!

as a matter of fact, i'm currently passing up the opportunity to sell my GT and buy a WRX. seriously, about 2 hours ago i again, but with the true temptation and option there, decided to keep my car and swap in in a couple years.

xcentrk, please straighten all that out, i'll change it.

Man that is really sweet. Nice job with the transplant. That is what I would really like to do to my 97 LGT.

That must be quite a change from the stock engine...man the feeling.

That's because this thread is almost 7 years old. Please observe the date stamps.

About the only thing I could find that wasn't taken down was this video:
http://www.streetfire.net/video/1998-su ... _14615.htm (http://www.streetfire.net/video/1998-subaru-legacy-wrx-motor-swap-330whp-23psi_14615.htm)

I know he sold the car quite a few years ago and has moved on to other things.

It's still one of my favorite videos of a Subaru.

It's still one of my favorite videos of a Subaru.

That's where I'll be someday - wrx swapped GT wagon! But for speedo shots of turbo legacys I like this one better:

Launch Control, wheel spin through 60 kmh, speedo pegged :smt007
