I purchased a Perrin lightweight crank pulley and I cant get my OEM crankshaft pulley off. I followed all their directions but it still doesnt budge. Perrin tech support says there is an OEM tool that holds the fly wheel from turning because my clutch is slipping when I go to take the CrankShaft pulley nut off.

They also said i might be able to make something. Anyone every done this? or have the OEM tool?

Put the car in 5th gear, stand on the brakes, and have someone on the breaker bar with the 22mm socket.

Or, you can try the method of putting the breaker bar on the fender (with some padding) and blipping the starter once or twice.

There is also an access panel at the back of the engine under a rubber cover that you can put a flatblade screwdriver into to stop the flywheel from turning.

Tried that. well, not the screw driver thing. The perrin guy told me if was my clutch slipping since its an older car, thats why it seems like my motor is cranking even in 5th gear.

Does this screwdriver thing not hurt something? that is probably what this special tool does.

The flywheel has teeth on it, you use the screwdriver to hold the flywheel in place.

It's likely that the 22mm nut holding the pulley on is just on really tight. When Grafton and I took mine off my BD, he held the screwdriver while I put a 3ft cheater bar over my socket wrench. You will be pulling/pushing to the left (if you're standing at the front of the engine). You will need a LOT of force to break it free. You could try soaking it with some PB blaster.

Another technique I have heard of is to wrap a chain wrench around the crank pulley.

I had the same issue. I dropped my car off and my buddy tried installing the pulley a few hours later (car was cold at the time) he broke 2 sockets trying to get it off but no dice!

Next attempt .. drove my car around for 10 mins and tried to take the pulley off again... BINGO..

Just remove the pulley with the engine warm/hot instead of sitting cold.

Worked for me, it may work for you

A warm engine will help the crank pulley nut expand a bit... same idea as PB blaster + heat on a rusty bolt.

last time I had to pull mine off I just put a pipe piece as an extension on my breaker bar and let it rest on the frame or whatever was over there and bumped my starter. It broke right loose.

I wish I had tried to break this evil bolt loose before I pulled my motor for the head gasket job.
I have tried 3 beefy impacts & no luck. I cant really use a pipe & breaker bar with the engine out- Ill be rolling the engine all over the garage. I cant go any further until I get this bolt loose :smt009

You have the lock the flywheel on the backside from turning.

Get a really long breaker bar (like 5 feet), and have one or two people hold the bar while you give the motor a small crank. Do this whilst the engine is warm, and it should come loose.

I allready have the motor out  I have a 3/4" impact to try next :smt021

that sounds like a broking wrist if not done right. just but a breaker bar between the frame and ground on the right(passenger lhd) side of the car and give it a quick click of the the starter and it will break loose

Dangerous...

This is the 3rd or 4th thread I've seen on here regarding removing a crank pulley.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned using an airgun? MUCH safer, and easier than breaker bars and "blipping" the motor.

because you would need the engine out of the car, or remove the rad to get to it.

^^ Yep. No way you could use an air impact in the car.

Hondas have issues with this (mainly because they have reverse rotation engines). My shop has a 3/4" impact with a 17mm socket setup specifically for that purpose.

In this instance, you need a BIG lever. Be careful with the screwdriver through the flywheel deal though. That section of the transmission case is kind of thin, and it doesn't take much with a long cheater bar to create a HUGE amount of force. Plus most consumer screw drivers aren't that strong. The starter trick is not particularly safe, but its probably the easiest and most effective method. You are pretty much guaranteed to break something (loose). It there is a chance it might be the bolt you are intending to break loose.

BTW the OEM tool fits into holes in the OE pulley and allows you to hold it while you turn the bolt.

DO NOT PUT A BREAKER BAR ON THE FENDER! You can put a breaker bar with pipe against the ground and blip the starter but NEVER put it against the fender.

Good point, I missed that. You'll end up with a big dent in your fender.

I got a breaker bar put a towel on the fender then a block of wood then twisted my engine until the breaker bar rested on the wood then "bliped" the starter and it came right off. I was using a impact wrench socket though.
