remove all bolts holding the air intake 2 the car from the air filter box forward jack up passenger side front tire take plastic lock retainers off and pull back plastice shild untill u can get the snorkus (big black box) out then just pull it out put the plastic back and put the plastic push pins back in. u can take the tire off if you want.

It's not the snorkus that appears to cause the hesitation, it's the apparent lack of the torque box behind the throttle body. Personally I'm not overly fussed by the hesitation, it was there before I changed my intake and deleted the snorkus.

idk i have some hesition like that at about half throtle it seems to be slugish but if u give it more gas it takes off i have never had any hesitaion or lag a WOT
i though it was by shorting the pipe infront of the maf it caused turbulance accross the maf or something
and thx for the compliment on the write up lol
yea alot of people think its alot harder than it is u can PM me if u have any questions there is a write up some where but it really isnt that hard

i thought it was due to the lack of the resonator (snorkus) which under ~2k rpm's the air in the intake track acts as a spring and then that causes the maf to over register the amount of air going into the motor, the solution to the hesitation was the hybrid intake that replaces the torque box with smooth tubing from a SRI leaving the resonator and stock filter box in place.

I second the, "lack of snorkus" idea. I have used both the hybrid and SRI intakes with little noticeable low-end loss. The only real difference is noise.
P.S - I literally read all 20-odd pages of that thread before I did my intake.
Edit: Oh yeah, I tried the stock intake minus snorkus setup with no gains except noise.

So guys... I'm having a bit of the same problem. I crashed my 92 Legacy into a pole, crushing the passenger side fender and destroying the Resonator... if thats what its called: its the air box that sits inside the fender, pre-air filter. NE ways I have hesitation when I give it too much gas. The motor just dies. When I quickly tap on the gas pedal it hesitates for a second then it catches up. I am assuming that its not getting the right ammount of air so its choking itself. I want to fix the problem but I think I will just do an aftermarket cold-air intake. Any suggestions? Please get back to me asap. Thanks guys.

I think you have more issues than a missing resonator if your car is stalling when you give it throttle.

^^ plus 1
it shouldn't compleatly die or cough just hestate a little before it takes off like it should at full throtle and its mainly only from a stop or flooring it from under 1000 RPM
how ever i ripped mine out and have had no problems i would go with the CAI but you could just get someones snorkus they pulled out and replace yours
one thought though is the snorkus/silenser still in there? you said the pasanger side fender was CRUSHED? what kind of "pot hole" can crush your fender? or do you just mean the bumper? but if it crushed every thing that might have crushed how the air gets to you engine so a quick fix could be to just pull it out? just a though

No... I slid sideways into a light pole; not a pot hole. What is the CAI? I'm not new to the automotive field but this is my first turbo'd Subaru. What about replacing the whole intake with a cold-air set-up? I have not been able to find one but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

CAI is cold air intake :smt023

ohhh a pole! that makes more sense sorry
its the 92 turbo?
Garrick

yeah its the 92 turbo. see... when I hit, it also cracked the outer shell on the maf sensor. the sensor itself did not appear to be damaged so i just re-sealed the sensor where it was cracked and broken. I suppose that could be a possible problem if others have removed the snorkus with no real problems. Has anyone done any major mods on the EJ22? I've got a 1992 Legacy GT Turbo 5spd and I want to build a stronger motor with a bigger turbo... and a new programable ECU. I haven't really seen anything done as far as punching out cylinders or monster turbo applications but I would really like to RALLY this one out.

ok so apparently it doesn't have any hesitation or stalling until the engine gets to normal opporating temp... if that says anything to anyone.

You busted the MAF.

So I just removed the snorkus and started it up and it smelled like it was running fairly rich, I'll go for a test drive in a bit here. Also it seems like there is a lot more dust that can now get in the intake, and hitting a puddle seems like a bad Idea now?

That's what a filter is for. And if you hit a puddle that splashes up over your fender liner and into your fender and in past your filter, you have more than a puddle to worry about. Your legs would be wet.

Good point, so I just got back from a little drive and the car feels much smoother, it didnt seems any louder. Also I use to get a whistling noise above 3000 rpm and thats gone now. Overall seems like a good little mod

Believe me it is possible to hit a puddle deep enough to hydrolock the motor without getting your legs wet :)

on accident??? or are you trying to find these giant puddles and drive through them?

I saw a Corolla drive through in front of me so I figured I could get through without a problem. Big mistake.

Just removed my Debaffle box in the fender well area and replaced the big snorkus (the box by the TB), replaced it with the intake pipe that comes on some 2.2's,1.8's, and 2.5's (or at least in canada).
Didn't drive it yet, but initial observations, seems like throttle rsponse is a touch better, and it sounds fucking sweet!
