View Full Version : MAKING YOUR OWN LED side mirror turn signals ;-)

So I was searching the japaneseparts.com site for overpriced stuff I'll never afford lol, when I saw these stick-on LED turn signals (for $209.52 by the way). Anyhow, did a search on ebay, found more stickers (around $20), then got curious if you could make your own to avoid the tacky visible wiring and obvious burnouts that would cost you more stickers :smt024 ...

So, I eventually came across this thread:
http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generation-maxima-1995-1999/574671-ever-wondered-how-make-your-own-led-side-mirror-turn-signal.html

The link towards the bottom (http://www.a-room.info/customize/customize066.html) looks useful too, but the Chinese symbols are not so easily translated by Yahoo...

Anyone wanna first hand at it?!?! I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in this (unfortunate Maxima) mod :smt020

These are pretty cool.. however.. im assuming you would have to drill a small hole for the wires:

Wonder how much of a pain it is to pop off the mirrors. I guess if you were going to pop them off.. might as well add heater elements to your mirrors as well at the same time.

it requires taking off some of the sliver backing of the mirror?

My only question is... why? I've never seen the point other than the fact that larg SUV's have large blind spots and usually really daft drivers behind the wheel. So if you're driving in their blind spot and they miraculously actually use the turn signal, you can see some blinking LED's telling you you're about to get crushed.

Come on, it's just fuckin cool like most of the unnecessary shit we do to our leggies on this forum lol!

I have to give u props for that. I too personally don't like the LED turn signal on the mirror thing, but u speak the truth to most mods we do to out Legacy's

i posted on sl-i about using a newer subaru mirror with the side signal in them already, bigger mirrors that the older ones, and they in my opinion look pretty classy. i have not done it, but how hard can it be?

It's not intuitive, here are the issues I see:

1. You'll have to see if the 3 holes that the mirror uses to attach to the door line up.
2. The mirror assembly itself on the newer Legacy is a different shape versus the 2nd generation. 2nd generation is the only generation that does not have a regular triangle shape for the part that attaches to the door - it's more of a trapezoid.
3. Is the wiring harness for the power mirror the same? Might have to splice wiring, on top of the wiring you'll have to do to get the turn signals to work.

Obviously with enough fabrication you can work around all that but that's how hard it can be.

Yeah I've seen this done before on a Taurus of all cars...was about to attempt this too about 10 years ago. I was really surprised the glass in sideview mirrors are one-way types that you can get LED's to shine through...

For $230 I could do one myself far less cheaper.. I was going to but I was unsure how it would look but I was going to do it the arrow way.

Found these at Oreilly's auto parts:

Something else pretty similar:

bringing this back up, i would like to put a led strip around the outside of the mirrors, to make it look like the ones a lot of CUV's are starting to use, so you could see me from all sides of that side of the car. where would i be able to put the wiring to and from. i would probably drill a small hole in the mirror for the wiring to go through to go through and through the door panel, and i guess i would have to run wiring from the front turn signals to the mirror. not very well thought out right now. is there any suggestions on how to do this? http://www.radiantz.com/index1.html?39.html&1 that is what i was thinking of it is for motorcycles though.

Yup, have to thread your wiring through to either the turn signal on the control stalk, or your front indicator lights, or if you've installed the JDM turn signals you can tap in there too.

jewbaru

Yea. Really easy. I looked at the whole tapping in under the dash and what not but it seemed a little hairy considering I'm not a pro. I ran mine through the door and then up to the blinkers. Worked well and didn't change the load on the flasher so the sequence of flashes never changed

I used these. You have to be real careful taking off the glass, but I put on Outback Heated mirrors to replace my none heated mirrors with it, and no exposed wires +heat + led turn signals for less than $100 I'm pretty happy with how they turned out... http://www.sharkracing.com/acecart/bin/ ... =011200000 (http://www.sharkracing.com/acecart/bin/shop.cgi?action=view&itemID=ledmirrordiy&cate=011200000).

Auto mirror glass is one way, so they can be placed BEHIND the glass for a proper, clean look.

I don't have any install pics, but I'll do a brief write-up on it this weekend with pics/vid of the final product.
