Okay, so C-class cars are going to be chosen.

...but what tracks will they be on?

HERE'S YOUR CHANCE TO VOTE!!!

Vote for the selection of tracks which will be used for January's invitational. Here are your options:

OPTION 1: Only mega-curvy and twisty tracks, like Tsukuba Short and Maple Valley
OPTION 2: A combination of curvy and speed tracks, like Suzuka, go short with Maple Valley short, and open it up with Road Atlanta and Suzuka
OPTION 3: Mega tracks like the infamous King Cobra test track and the Nissan Speedway
OPTION 4: A random selection of curvy, fast, and unpredicably short or long tracks (in other words, I pick the track, you race it... no questions asked)

NOTE: Any of the above may have Nurburging/Nordscheife thrown in.

Cast your votes now!

I voted for the curvy and speed combination. Mix it up a bit from week to week, but keep us the hell off of King Cobra. That track is built for go carts lol

Are there any particularly long or particularly short tracks (other than King Cobra) that you want to make sure are NOT in the rotation? Also, does everyone have the downloaded tracks, or should we just exclude those from the competition (like Mugello or Silverstone)?

Exclude the downloadable tracks. Not everyone has Xbox credits to waste.

Myself included

Would someone be so willing as to instruct this humble host which tracks are downloadable, like Mugello?

On October 19, 2007, the third downloadable content was announced in the form of a new downloadable track, Twin Ring Motegi. The track will be playable in the form of four variations, including three road courses and an oval. The downloadable track was made available through Xbox Live on October 26, 2007 and it currently costs 400 MS points.

On December 1, 2007, the fourth downloadable content was announced in the form of a new track, Road America, costing 100 MS points,

Si, pero parlo italiano e non parlo portuguese.

That test was a btch. Four essays and four IDs, and to top it off, it counts ad 50% of the final class grade. I'll be lucky if I can pull out my B.

Keep king cobra and the related super long snake tracks out of the competition. 1) they're not real tracks 2) they are meant as test courses, as such tracks simply do not exist 3) they're nearly impossible to conduct a clean race with clean passes 4) I've never bothered to learn the racing lines because of reasons 1-3... and I imagine I'm not the only one.

I'd like to see a mix of tracks that will test a vehicle in its overall balance. Oh- And are you locking out tuning so that a people create a blanket tuned car, and not a tune per track?

Sounds to me like that's our next vote. I'm not sure... but I'm favoring having only ONE car selected for the first invitational, with multiple tuning profiles. Which is probably what some folks are doing already... am I right? (Plus, it sounds more like what typical racing consists of... having one car with multiple tunes for multiple tracks; it's still a challenge, because no matter how much you tune an Eagle Talon, it's still gonna be an Eagle Talon, and no matter how little you tune an Evo X, it'll still be an Evo X.)

But, keeping this thing on track... how DOES everyone feel about racing "The Ring"? (Nordscheife/Nurburgring) Is this a viable track option, or just a torture session?

Well...

I found a new car. :smt027

the Ring is ok as long as you keep it to one or two laps. It's just more biased to cars with more top end.

We could keep the voting open longer, but basically this thing's wrapped up - option 2 wins by a landslide. As such, tracks to be expected and selected for the competition will include:

Laguna Seca
Road Atlanta
Suzuka
Tsukuba
Maple Valley Raceway
Sunset Infield

I'm leaning towards not including Nurburgring unless we have some sort of a tie, in which case I could make it like a sudden death thing where it's only one lap.

FYI, I plan on beginning the invitational on the last week of January (that will be after my wife and I will have settled in to the new place we are hopefully getting). Another vote will decide what day of the week we run the challenge, and how often each month we will have challenges, but it feels like one track per week would be good. This would give a good chance to get some interesting 15-30+ lap races going. Thoughts?

IMO the ring shouldn't be the tiebreaker...it caters too much to one kind of car.

I dig those track selections though.

I like the tracks, nordschleife would be painful with C class cars, but is doable...

As to the tuning, if the plan is a single track for many laps each week, there's no way to lock out changing the tune, so it wouldn't matter. I'm just not very fond of racing people who spend hours tweaking their cars to the .01degree of camber for 20 seconds more of tire life. And there are those who really do spend that much time doing it (my friend does, and it's annoying waiting for him to find that one tuning profile between tracks). A 15-30 lap race would mean that someone would want to have a decent setup though.

1 car for the whole series is the way it should be.

yeah...the ring caters too much to top end cars. and locking out tunes isn't a bad idea. I think I'm gonna run just sport suspension shit anyways

Mr. Sociable

I'm pretty sure 90% of my car is unable to be tuned. So tuning does me little good anyway.

I agree, and races should be a maximum of 10 laps. Any longer than that and we might as well be at a LAN tournament.

If the races are on a day I can manage, I will be there to make up numbers in the pack.

Matt of all people actually said my Boxer4Racing STi is going to be tough to beat...that's coming from Matt of all people. We ran pretty neck and neck last night...even had the same race time down the the thousandth of a second last night on Maple Valley. This should be good.

Was that the stupid '04 that pulled on everyone down the straight of sunset infield?

Plays_with_Toys

^^^ The STi's have ridiculously more power than most every other C class cars (in terms of their speed and acceleration values). Unfortunately, due to their AWD they also are better than their handling stats represent.
