It can be several things. First it takes quite a while for grease to burn off the cat. You dont state the mileage on the car, but its not unusual for soobys to get oil leaks that dont show themselves when parked. You need to wash the bottom of the engine and take the car out for a spin. After that inspect the bottom of the engine. Likely culprits are cam seals. Usually the main or a leaking oilpump will show up on the pan.

PS the rear seperator plate can also be a silent leak. OLook at the underside of the car for signs of a leak, and not the engine itself.

It takes very little grease or oil to make a very bad smell. An oil leak may not even show up on the dipstick depending upon your change interval.

So far everything i have suggested costs nothing do besides a little labor and maybe a visit to a doityourself car wash.

Also when was the last time you changed the PCV valve. A dirty/stuck pcv can cause oil leaks.

How many miles on your car please.

ALso inspect all the CV boots, not for cracks, but to make sure the boot clamps are tight.

The smell your describing is grease -OR- just a thought, does it happen in recirculate too, then it may be the blower motor wiring insulation. Again easy enough to find out, drop the blower motor and use your nose :)

Air intake for the HVAC is on the passenger side of the car under the hood by the windshield wiper, and yes you putting grease on the header can cause this.

Also under body wash is not meant for grease an oil, but dirt and road salt.

Mine has a burning smell too, but not all the time. I'm thinking of the leak from my power steering that's pushing thru my vents :-?
