As the title reads...I wanted a really nice sound coming out of my subby without having to spend a ton of money on an exhaust.
I was in the shop with the pops on saturday, and I wanted to see what it sounded like if we just disconnected the flanges from the muffler to the midpipe....it sounded amazing..I was actually surprised because I've had friends with honda's and nissans do this to their cars and it sounded just ricey and bad.

I really wish I could have taken pics of everything but I wasn't thinking about it...too excited to hear it =]]
What you'll need:
Welding machine.
Welding skills (or a friend with skillzzzz)
2 feet or so of metal pipe (I cut mine off of a CR-V exhaust)
a good 1-2 hours
Hammer
torch

First step:
Make a cut like so:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/intermed_muffler-1.jpg

Take this and bend it up so you can see and access everything inside.
You'll find a mess of barriers and pipes and junk that looks impossible to take out...but its not =]

Second step:
Now is where you grab that hammer.
Start buy knocking out all the barriers...if you tap em' hard enough they'll just snap right off no problem.
Now, you can go about this step anyway that you want, because by step 3 all you want is to have a hollow'd muffler
(only thing in there should be 1 long pipe coming in from the exit of the muffler)

Third Step:
Ok this is a pretty hard part.
You can use a Sawzall, or a torch.
What you need to do now, is cut out the the tip/the pipe that it's connected to going inside the muffler...this sounds complicated so refer to the pic
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/intermed_muffler1-1.jpg
(where you want to cut is shown in yellow)
**Disclaimer**
I did this way because it's a LOT easier...if you wanted to you could only cut off the portion inside of the muffler and get a pipe bent from that to the entrance pipe.

Fourth step:
Kinda tricky but pretty good, this is what I did.
I took that 2 foot or so pipe I cut, and inserted it into the hole where the tip was.
now all you want to do is make it so you put it in at kind of an angle so it just slides right over the pipe for the inlet
*REFER TO PIC OF RANDOM MUFFLER I GOOGLE IMAGED*
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/mufflercutopen1-1.jpg

Fifth step:
Now this is just cleaning everything up.
We applied some anti rust chemical goop everywhere that was cut open just to be safe.
The things you need to weld are:
New pipe to the inlet pipe.
The new pipe to where it is inserted into the muffler (if you cut a hole like I did)
And then weld the flap shut.

FINALLY:
Throw that bad boy on and listen to your sexy engine purr.
Now, if you put a new pipe like I did, it doesn't exactly look great as a tip...luckily my dad had a random tip laying around so we just threw it on there.
My dad is professional and works on cars for a living, so if you do it yourself PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure everything is sealed and done right or it's gonna sound like ass.

AND NOW the result in a video clip!

EDIT***
You might hear a little rattle in this video..sounds kinda like a leak, but the tip we used is held on by a bolt and there's a washer on it that was rattling around because we didn't tighten it down all the way.
I'll try and take a new video soon if you would like

Seems to me that you might as well as cut the muffler right off and put a pipe and tip in its place. If I followed correctly, you cut out all the internals out of the muffler and put a pipe from input straight out to the output hole of the muffler?

exactly.
but the reason I did that instead of just straight piping it is because the emissions testing here checks if you have a muffler. If you don't, instant fail.
So I'm tricking them into thinking I have one when I really don't :smt029

Gotcha, Michigan doesn't care whatsoever about emissions testing  . I always forget about that.

yeah....thats a good way to trick them....you could also try cutting both ends off of the muffler and clear it out and then weld it at the seams so they dont notice weldmarks where it should be flat lol

The welds are on the top of the axleback... so you'd need to be able to see between the body of the car and the top of the axleback.
I doubt that's happening anytime soon.

Yep. Seen it before. This was done on NASIOC a while back using a WRX exhaust. Exact same method of peeling off the top and gutting the internals.

My friend kinda did something like this but he did it on his cats. he took his cats apart took out all the internal blockage and welded it back together and went right threw DEQ :)

that wont fly with most cops.. Flashlight in the muffler... No baffles instant ticket. :-/

you should call it a "straight pipe muffler"

or you could just put a small gap between the muffler and the pipe

like this guy did
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcV2nlOBVS0

how to install
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihEWbW-gsjg

i tried this myself and love the sound although i had to dremel the old bolts off and replace them for it to work

also if you try this dont do a gap bigger than 4 washers, youll get a great sound but like 10 mpg :smt022

im using just 1 washer right now and it sounds great

So it isn't ridiculously loud? I'm thinking about strait piping my exhaust, I like the sound, would it be a lot louder with 2.25" piping? Some people complain Stromung and other mufflers are to loud seems like strait pipe would be crazy loud.

Putting washers in to give yourself sound and a exhaust leak is stupid.

headers + magnaflow axleback ftw.

Sounds stupid indeed! I am just deciding on what to do having a limited amount of money for that budget. What about the DIY above? cutting and removing the inside of the muffler and changing it to a pipe which is inside the muffler?

Id wait a little longer and save to have something legit put on my car.
