Crankshaft repairable or not?

Just out of curiosity - are Subaru's crankshafts repairable (specifically interested about the Phase II EJ25)?

I'm no expert, but AFAIK some crankshafts are surface-hardened (nitrided (http://steel.keytometals.com/Articles/Art117.htm) or similar). The surface of such crankshafts is very hard and has a chance of surviving a rod bearing failure, but if there is damage, they cannot be 'repaired' (re-grounded) and have to be replaced.

'Regular' crankshafts can be re-grounded and re-used with an oversize rod bearing. And I just found out that oversize rod bearings are in deed available for the EJ25, so the crankshaft must be 'repairable'.

I'm not sure that there is really something wrong with the crankshaft, but the engine makes a very distinct 'ticking / slapping' noise at ~3000 RPMs if the load is light. It also does it for 1/4 of a second when cold started. I received various diagnosis from 'experts' ranging from 'rod bearing failure' through 'piston slap' to 'it's not internal'...

It may be worth noting that the noise has been there ever since I got the car and I've done about 40000km with it. Now I have to do the head gasket repair and I thought replacing all rod bearings wouldn't hurt (except for emptying my wallet).

Subaru crankshafts can be balanced. So I'd be safe to say that they can be ground.

If they are already damaged it doesn't make sense to try to balance them or reuse them.

you can have them re-ground. they also make bearings 15-20-30-and 55 over so if u spin a bearing and it doesnt clear up till around 20 over. they have bearings that will fit. but thats just an option. it might be cheaper to source out a used crank, and have it balanced. those are both 2 options that are way cheaper then buying a new one.. subaru wants IIRC around 3-$400 for new and cosworth wants $2500 or more for their billet crank(drool)

Are you talking about the end of the crankshaft where the vibratioon damper sits?
