View Full Version : Okay, so here's a possibility for my ride

I know that ride modding is a personal thing, but any opinions on this would be nice. If I keep the Outback, here's what I might do with it:

Engine:
ej25t swap, completely stock STi motor, STi ECU, wiring harness, Cat-less turbo-back 2.5" exhaust

Transmission:
STi 6MT, SPT clutch (ugh! auto to manual swap, but it'd be worth it), STi center diff w/ Rennick Motorsports low gear kit, STi rear diff

Suspension:
To start out with, a 3" dropbracket/spacer lift. That's right, I said LIFT!!!! Eventually, I'd like to make my own 4" lift (that's a 6.5" for the standard Legacy) with Fox coilovers, or even air shocks. I have plans for this, it'll be sic.

Wheels:
Unsure. A strong off road wheel with proper width, backspacing, offset, and lug pattern for the Outback is hard to find.

Tires:
31x10.50(!) BFG KM/2 or Goodyear Wrangler MT/R

Other mods:
Off road bumpers trimmed fenders (by about 3/4"), tubular, heavy duty roof rack w/ CB antenna mount(s), tubular rocker panel protection, Infinity door speakers, sub, and amp, 5" off road lights (x2 on front bumper, x4 on roof rack)

It's obvious this thing won't be very street oriented. It'll be like none other on the road, though. What do you guys think?

Sounds good.

But let's be realistic.

Realistically: Stock motor with 3" lift and all the "other" mods, save more money

After that, upgrade suspension to 4" system, save more money

After that, swap in STi components, save more money

After that, finish up tying up odds and ends

Why turbo it? If your plan is to make it an off road car, I would highly suggest an H6 swap instead. Sounds good otherwise.

Since the H6 is a motor available in the Outback, I'd assume it'd be easier, but I see one major problem with the H6: almost no aftermarket support. The hp and tq output is impressive, but if I want more, I'm kind of on my own. Granted, at low speed wheeling it would be the better motor, but in the mud when your best friend is high rpm and a lead foot, I'm seeing the ej25t as a good bet (If I'm wrong, PLEASE correct me, but that's just how I see it).

you want torque at low revs. a turbo motor is not ideal. you want high compression maybe a stroker

Yeah turbo is not so good off road... and 31's? maybe a little stretch?

Dont get me wrong I think it would be awesome..

Drop a Wankle Rotary Engine in there imo.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited is what you need.

In stock form, those things haul ass. Seriously

I Think it would be pretty cool to have an STi swapped, lifted Outback. But I agree that you'd need more low-end torque rather than high end. But then again you could do it anyway and just do rally-X

having 31's would make it roll like a ball at any semi high speeds

you could do the very first centrifugal supercharger on a suby... all you would need is to match a paxton or vortech that would push the right amount of air, build a custom bracket to mount it, use intercooler kits available and run custom tubing (not a huge deal considering you feel you can make your own lift kit) then bring it somewhere to get tuned!

wollah! forced induction providing low-end power to a motor with as many aftermarket upgrades as your heart...or wallet size desires

work on the lift kit first. Actually, go to the outback forum because I know at least one outback like yours that's been lifted.

I have a feeling that the outback forum will be my friend here. And I never really thought of supercharging a Subie motor. The one disadvantage I see to this is having to run higher octane fuel, which I really don't want to do. I know that if I get a later model 3.0, this wouldn't so much be an issue. I'll keep everyone updated.

3.0 is a min 91 octane. its roughly a $4-6 difference to fill up a 3.0 and a 2.5 right now. its a sacriface for power

IIRC, weren't 3.0 motors from '04 or so on switched over to regular unleaded as the recommended fuel? I think I remember reading that in Drive Magazine. :smt017

2004-2007 H6 required 91 octane.
2008 H6 RECOMMENDED 91 octane but not required.

jg09
12-15-2008, 04:42 PM
Well, considering that 91 is so much cheaper than it was, that's a sacrifice I can make.

Your talking about a $10,000+++ conversion and you can't afford to pay for 91 octane? :smt005

You son of a BITCH  Why did you have to bring up the 5.9!?! I've lusted after one of those since before I could drive. I've yet to drive one, but judging from how fun my 4.0L XJ was, I could only imagine. 0-60 in 6.8sec, full time 4WD with low range, and live axles front and rear; I honestly don't think I would mind getting 9mpg.

My buddy had one of those. Could go anywhere. We never got stuck in anything and not only that but that thing could move.

I test drove one once, it was a total beast! One friend of mine had a 5.9 Dakota back in high school... jesus talk about traction issues! Those are superb motors, make a healthy sounding exhaust note to boot.

A good friend of mine used to own a '98 ZJ 4.0 Limited with a 3.5" Rubicon Express, 30.5 TSL SX's and quick sway bar disconnects. Those are very capable rigs. If I was into offroading, I'd buy the same.

That's what I ran. A '98 ZJ 4.0 Special Edition with a 2" BB, 30" MT/Rs, JKS sway bar disconnects, a full header-back exhaust, K&N intake, the list goes on and on. Very capable rig that I miss to this day. I actually have pics of it in the Members Ride II page.

^^haha thread jack! whoops (and this isn't going to help, sry)

5.9 huh? :smt015 i'm putting together a 6.7L for my s10  ... but it's going down :smt028 , not up so i won't be off roading, but i'll be scraping the hell out of the ground

Eh, I'd kill myself with all that power. I've already had a few close calls with 165hp at the crank. Now when I'm ready for big power in an SUV, a 427 swap into my Explorer will be calling my name...
