Power Loss and bad fuel mileage..

Ive been noticing alot lately that my 97 LGT sedan is haveing lots of problems with power and fuel mileage..

On inclines i have to almost put the pedal to the floor for it to pick up speed decently, and sometimes from a dead stop(at traffic lights mostly) the car doesn't want to move, even feels like its hesitating when it does try to accelerate.

my fuel mileage went from getting ~400KM to a tank, to getting ~300(if im lucky) which is weird..

The only thing ive done is remove my intake resinator. Ive done an oil change but the problems started happening long after that.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be wrong? Any help would be greatly welcomed.. car has 177xxxKM

aside from a full tune up?
(-plugs, wires, distirbutor or whatever we have, belts, fuel filter, oil change and filter, air filter)

might wanna make sure plugs and wires are on very snug, one time i replaced mine and i didn't squeeze hard enough for the wires to click to the distributor and my car ran very similar to what ur describing, so maybe one could have wiggled off? it's worth 30 seconds to check

for some reason that never even dawned on me to check... other then that anyone suggest any plug wires? something afordable would be nice :lol:

id replace hte o2 sensor first thing


if bad it will DRASTICALLY affect your gas mileage by running rich

Aren't all those times you had to go to the gas station when you normally wouldn't adding up?


Fix it once, and you'll save a pile of cash!

I had a similar problem, but also had a CEL. My knock sensor was bad. New one cost me $68. Used ones could be found for less (Reason has a load of 'em) Also, If you did the snorkus delete, make sure all hoses are seated correctly and check for other leaks, Vaccuum or otherwise.

yeah ive got a CEL, and the scan did say knock sensor, but the local subaru shop told me like $300 for a knock sensor..i don't have that kind of money atm lol...

You never mentioned the light, which is very important here.

They're in a tight spot, that's why they try to stick it to you at the Stealership.


When I changed mine, The differance was night and day.

lol the dealership i went to for alot of my mechanical work, there was this guy i was pretty tight with after he experienced what it feels like to have 3 seized calipers at 60mph in my car. He was somehow able to slip his hand into the tight spot under the throttle body, get it out, and replace it without moving a thing.

it was crazy.

Yeah, it is fairly easy to do. However, the dealership goes through other protocals and charges you for that. IE. doing diagnostics before and after, resetting the CEL, checking WOT measurements etc.... most of which, I didn't even need to do on mine.

Rule #1 when replacing parts to diagnose a problem:

1. Start with the cheapest parts first.

And o2 sensor is not very cheap.
