It would seem our beloved FHI has fallen victim to the times:
Look it up elsewhere if you want. I was unbelieving as well. Its for real.

Subaru to withdraw from World Rally Championship

Subaru has announced its decision to withdraw from the 2009 World Rally Championship

This sudden decision was in response to the widespread economic downturn that is affecting the entire automotive industry, and follows Suzuki’s withdrawal announced yesterday.

After 20 years in the sport, during which time the Prodrive-run Subaru World Rally Team has won six World Rally Championship titles, this is not only sad news for Subaru and the team, but also for millions of rallying fans around the world. Thanks to its highly successful World Rally Championship programme, Subaru has developed into one of the world’s most widely recognised and evocative automotive brands.

Prodrive chairman, David Richards, said: “Subaru’s departure from the World Rally Championship is a great loss as it is one of the sport’s icons. The Subaru World Rally Team has created true champions such as Colin McRae and Richard Burns and its absence will be felt by many the world over. Although this decision closes a significant chapter in Prodrive’s history, our focus now turns to the future.”

For many, Prodrive and Subaru are synonymous, given the long-standing and close association between the two companies. However, while the Subaru World Rally Team historically represented a significant part of Prodrive’s business, today it accounts for no more than 20 per cent of the company’s turnover.

Prodrive will look to redeploy as many of the rally team as possible in other areas of its business operations, which have grown to span advanced engineering and manufacturing for the automotive, defence, marine and aerospace industries, in addition to other motorsport programmes.

Despite the current economic downturn, Prodrive’s automotive engineering business remains buoyant as it works with vehicle manufacturers to accelerate the development of next generation fuel-efficient vehicles and alternative fuel technologies.

Together with Subaru, Prodrive’s commitment to its customer rally teams will also continue unabated for 2009 and beyond. Over the past 15 years, Prodrive has sold close to 500 rally cars to more than 400 private competitors and independent rally teams in 47 countries. During this time, Prodrive’s customers have won five consecutive Production World Rally Championships and countless international rallies. In 2008, Prodrive-supported customer teams have claimed eight rally championship titles around the world.

Looking ahead, 2010 will see the introduction of new World Rally Championship technical regulations, which provide Prodrive with an opportunity to prepare for re-entering the championship with a new team and build on its 24 years of World Rally Championship experience and success.

"let someone else win?"
I don't follow rally too closely but I'm pretty sure we haven't exactly been the hot stuff for the past several years.
Secondly, this probably has a lot to do with the new "spec" rules for the upcoming season which dictate that all cars have inline 4-cylinders. That eliminates Subaru by default unless they design a new platform.

They say the real reason was because of the new rules regarding engine type. Economy was just an excuse to get out early.

The rule changes are stupid. It's almost NASCAR like. It's not like FHI have won anything in awhile.

The sport will be back... it'll still be strong at grassroots. The cutbacks were inevitable. Honda's out of F1 too, but that doesn't mean their R&D teams disappear. F1, WRC, NASCAR... they're all unnecessary to producing vehicles... they are simply testing grounds and bragging rights for the companies.

WRC junkies won't buy a brand new Subaru to go rallying... and those that do probably make up less than 1% of all sales.

Expect a lot of "heritage" style advertising in the next 12-18 months.

"remember the good ol' days... it's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru."

The new engine/transmission standards were the cause IMO.

It is worse, they're done for an indefinite period of time. The new regs essentially make the subaru engine illegal for 2010, so why bother with the 2009 season?

However, there is a slim ray of hope--the Group A cars, dunno if they're still rallying.
Also, maybe they'll field a Baja 1000 forester or baja in the next couple years.

There's also a tiny possiblility that subaru might increase the scope of it's contingency payouts for autocross. That's something that might effect me, if I get to a regional AX and don't get raped.

I hadn't thought of that. I've placed high enough in regional RallyX events to win contingency money. It will be nice if they make the payout $500 or more.

So... What the hell was the FIA thinking by calling out such a motor requirement- without a doubt forcing out one of the biggest names in rallying? They said they want to grow the sport by bringing in more manufacturers, but then they turn their back on a manufacturer who has continually stuck it out?

I like the drive back towards lower cost rally cars, it made for some exciting racing (555 legacy/impreza anyone?) but jesus, what a retarded move.

there's really no reason for them.

Untrue. The price of competing in the WRC has gotten out of hand. When a gearbox costs upwards of $20k it's a little excessive. Switching to spec cars was the wrong move IMO however. Going to cheaper, slightly less modified and more production based cars would have been the right move. Slightly slower, but it fixes the cost point and could have been used to draw in some of the old companies too (Mitubishi, Audi, Pugeot, etc). That, and it effectively banned Subaru (who's been there since what...1993?), which is a baddddd move for the WRC.

They should use the JGTC rules. Use whatever chassis a manufacturer makes, along with any engine they make. Open it up and make it stupid crazy, with a class-system based on HP and chassis size.

Rally really isn't about top speed, it's about quickness, and it's about innovation. What other autosports mandate that the crowd can help you right your car and then allow you to modify your handbrake into a manual shift mechanism? When did you see an F1 pitcrew change out a transmission in 10mins, on the ground?

I say let the manufacturers and teams innovate... :smt028

Soooooooo, this means subaru killed the impreza and make it a "short wheelbase" hatchback for no reason.

ive been a rally fan since i was literally 5yr old. and this is truly depressing for me. to see our beloved wr blue rockets take on challenging courses on and off road end their almost 20 year campaign because the wrc wants to ban all motors that dont suck... damnit this sucks ass

It'll be fat and slow like what Mitsu turned the EVO into.

Also, FIA are the same people that handle F1, and look how much of a clusterfcuk that's been the past few years? I'm disappointed, but not surprised that these greedy idiots would make such a move.

Hopefully this is just a temporary setback, but if I wasn't paying attention and this is permanent, it could signal the beginning of a new direction for Subaru. I still like my Subaru very much, and this is probably not going to affect my appreciation of the brand right now. Of course, not being in the World Rally Championship is going to have ramifications (i.e. no more homologation specials (spelling?)).

There are obviously other things in the world that are more important. This just means that Subaru enthusiasts may have to be more vocal with their interests.

Speed will only show highlights of WRC. Never really understood why; I guess NASCAR is more important. WRC is also not held in America at all. I once tried to watch full races on WRC's website; but it cost money.
