http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.p ... +scoop+diy (http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86258&highlight=hood+scoop+diy)
now heres my way. rivets n bondo..
first find out where your scoop will sit
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0058A1-1.jpg
using a permenant marker i marked up where to cut. lol
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0059A1-1.jpg
then using a sawzaw i cut a really jank(crappy) hole
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0060A1-1.jpg
then i test fit the scoop
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0061A1-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0062A1-1.jpg
looking good
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0063A1-1.jpg
then i sanded the whole hood with 180 grit and applied a dust coat of self etching primer
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0064A1-1.jpg
then i riveted the 4 corners of the scoop to the hood (no pics)
and started to lay teh bondo!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0068A1-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0069A1-1.jpg
then hours and hour of sanding..(no damn orbital sander for me i was broke) MY ARM HURTS LIKE HELL.
anywho. its sanded yeepee
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0070A1-1.jpg
then i coated the whole hood in a light coat of flat black...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0071A-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0072A-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2008/12/IMG0073A-1.jpg
then i applied 4 coats of clear and proceeded to wetsend and begin to polish finished pics to come tomorrow morning

ran into a few problems along the way.. bondoeing in 40 degree weather makes bondo crack when its hardend.. pissed me off i had to re bondo and sand for an additional 3 hours..
if u have the know how and the patience this is a awesome mod. if u dont then its a PITA that pays off in the long run. genuine win win situation.. lol

Wow that is incredible. I want that exact hood. I need a better scoop for my TMIC and I want a small scoop for my intake. I would love a hood like that, too bad you live so far away, I'd bring you a hood and pay you to show me how to do it.

If you have more than 2 coats of clear, wetsand and buff it. If it's just 2 coats, try buffing it out (Tho it won't be very glossy) with a coarse compound and a higher rpm range on the buffer. It should shine up a bit more than what it is now. Hope this helps.
Looking good so far. :smt023

well done man, i'm impressed the bondo came out that well in the cold weather. It can get really frustrating if it doesn't set perfectly or the cold makes it crack.
Keep up the good work and keep posting it for us to see!

I will be doing this with a carbon fiber RS hood and a 4" bugeye style carbon fiber hood scoop. O_O
Excellent. now put a turbo and intercooler under that scoop!

Im a plumber... I used Closet/Toilet bolts that are like 2" long instead of the little 1/2" bolts that come with the scoop. So all i needed to do was drill the holes out where they mounted on the scoop. I screwed up and didnt think of this untill i hacked and cut up my hood alot. I should of took my time and not rushed to be 100% perfect. It looks great though so dont get me wrong! I know you used fiberglass and what not to get a nice smooth surface so it looks like the scoop was built into the hood. Mine is just bolted on so i can always change it out or do something different in the future that is what i ment!
Like so:

It would be better to have a hole in the hood under the scoop so it is a true air scoop, and not just rice. But it does look cool.

no no... Mine is totally cut open like xXGTBspec and free flowing air! I made a metal cover though that is bolted to the hood to direct water to the back of the engine bay so it dont get my engine bay soaked. Summer time i can unbolt it off too! Since am in Seattle... It Rains ALOT so that is why i made up the cover plate!

Ah, I see. Throw up some pics of your setup from underneath!
...man, i got the sti scoop and air splitter just sitting here, im hesitant to start as i know nothing of bondo, rivets, etc.

Gotcha wait till tomorrow once she is installed! I was worried about bondo, rivets and crap... That's how I came up up the toilet bolt fix to beable to bolt her down, just drill out the holes for your scoop on your hood and I used a hand grinder with cutting wheel to get the air flow cutout.
My splitter is about to go in the trash or sell it for $10.

Summer Time Cover plate i can Unbolt for straight fresh air. It is C shaped a little to flow air into the engine bay but towards the firewall.

that looks good, what'd you make the cover from?

Just section in Lowes, they have precut sections of metal for like $8 to $20 in different sizes and thickness of metal. Went i cut out my hood scoop section i left the main brace section on the underside(that is what i used 4 screws to secure the plate too... So if you look closely inside my scoop you can see you the braces still there. Daylight pictures might be better.) BUT... 99 and earlier hoods might have different brace setup on how the hood are molded.

Great thread. I am sure it is pretty cut and dryy, but the whole layout is great. Nice DIY where ever you are. Lol.

just a suggestion. i was thinking about how it hard when your not a bondo man to get the bondo just right and the finish to look good and smooth, rather than painting where you may see blemishes or paint inperfections. try and wrap it with vinyl i have seen some of the hood kits that come in mat and gloss finishes, not ot mention the Di-noc carbon fiber wraps. there are videos on you tube showing them do complete cars etc.
I think it would look nice, and hides any inperfections in the body work. I am going to try it myself someday soon with an 07 WRX hawkeye scoop. But iam still debating weather to wrap hood first, then wrap hood scoop and install like Matty did. Or trying to attach the scoop first and then wrap both at the same time. just not sure how to handle the extra material needed to cover the scoop in the middle of a sheet.

Bondo is really not hard if you take you time and sand it smooth. I have done some bondo work before. That vinyl would be more of a pia then the bondo would be. Never tried it, but have seen vinyl wraps done on NASIOC so same thing.

Not to bring back an old thread but did you guys start out with an L hood? I have a 97 LGT that came factory with a hood scoop and I want to cut it out and install an STI hood scoop since I am going turbo.

If you are going to use an Impreza scoop, you will need an "L" hood.

I was wondering if anybody has ever built a custom intake to fit under one of these scoops?
Would it work, or no?
*Not talking about an intercooler like the Sti.

You would have to make some kind of water separator, but I have seen what you are talking about. I'm sure there is a pic of it on here somewhere.
