Would you buy a 97 Legacy L with what might have a head gasket leak if the price was right?

I'm up in arms.. I'd have a garage to use but it seems to be on the fence about if it can be done with the engine in the car..

the good thing about pulling the engine is replacing the oil seals... and other stuff...

What do you think?

97 had hill holder too I think?

also car has 200K+ miles and the owner said they are still using the car daily to go to work.

if you want to spend a day or two doing the work. if the price is right sure if you want a second car. as long as the car has been properly mentainted.

an L with hg problems, rare.
its not biggy to pull the engine you dont need to remove the hood, there is a additional prop point on the passenger side struit tower. i'd go for it if the price was right aka "really cheap"

the 97 does have the good mechanical hill holder ( the newer impreza owners complain about the newer kinds...)

what condition is the body in?

What's the price? The "right" price is so dependent on other factors. If the HG was blown and the car wasn't continually driven, sure. If it was still being driven short distances, the heads could well be warped, and other parts of the engine may be contaminated. You'd really have to check the entire block just to be sure at that point.

But yes, replacing all the seals and gaskets on an engine is a good move anyway.

What other parts could be damaged, Huffer?

My head gaskets are limiting me to about a 2-3 mile round trip range at the moment, as I try to be out of the vehicle before it even begins to overheat. I am replacing my long block come Christmas, but is there anything outside of the long block I need to worry about damaging by driving it the mile or so to work and back every day?\

Thanks.

I'm currently looking for a Subaru with blown gaskets for my motor swap project. A BD/BG/BK in that state goes for around $1500-2000 here, if that helps.

Buy it. It's worth more than that in parts alone.

hmm the 97 2.2L engine has single port headers? I should be able to bolt up 2.5L headers and also get a bump in CR as well to like 11:1?

2.5 sohc or dohc heads? sohc head might keep the cp around the same. but dohc heads will make you loose compression but can be fixed with thin HG's
