Welding rear diff?

What do you guys think about welding a rear diff?

I personally would do it the right way and spend the money for a LSD. If you weld it, then there will be no speed differential between the rear wheels and will hop around corners, not to mention will wear your tires faster. However, if I had a $500 beater that I didn't care about whatsoever, then I would do it just because.

i will start searching for a LSD, but mine already got welded, car feels nice!!

I broke the diff i had in their so i got a Version 2 STi wagon diff, but the axel splines are different so the guy used it to rebuild my diff and he weld it at the same time.... the car is tail happy now... dori dori san!


i will search for a LSD though.

Anyone know where i can get some performance rear axels? my rear end didn't get swapped when i did my TT swap so thats a weak spot, My diff already blewup and i already sold the donor car so i cant get that back :(

the diff is already strengthened so now i am worried about axles.

Should do, but you'll have to make sure the FD is the same as your tranny?
For that price though you're getting close to a Quaife LSD...

SureTrac LSD's are around $700, that's what a rally shop in NJ quoted me to have a real LSD in the rear. Most of the Subaru LSD's are viscous types, they operate like an open diff under certain conditions. A few older STi's got the clutch-type LSD in the rear though, but those still cost a bit.

The important thing is that you get a rear diff with the same ratio as your transmission. also check the transmission ratio because like the USDM WRX for example, the TR is 1.1 and not 1.0 so their "3.9" LSD is actually 3.54.

most drifters on a budget weld up the spider gears but they usually don't last.. bad welds / to much force on the welds.

any GC8 diff will fit in to our r160 diffs. and it is true you must match your final drive. The Kaaz and Quaife are both good but there clutch type diffs. Many people swear on Subaru's OEM VLSD but again its more about what the car is built for.

IMHO do not weld your diff no matter how tempting it is.

my diff is welded, i hate it with a passion.... except in dirt.

Long story short, He weld it, didnt tell me, i pick the car up, drove 1/2 mile, axel bearings poped he charges me to fix it, i got it back, now my tyres look like slicks yada yada i end up fixing it myself. I am never bringing my car to a garage again unless the problem is internal.

Just curious.. Why? did he weld the diff? Welding a diff and not telling the customer is almost unheard of?

wtf, thats something drag racers do! every time you make a turn your cars goin to jerk and jump a lil bit cuz the wheel are goin to be traving at the same speed, i would a LSD rear end, save your self the hassle, do it right the frist time around!!!

Those clutch type R160's use different axles (one is longer than the other) than the open or vLsd R160's btw. You should get the matching axles before you go and install it.

i got a suretrac lsd from a 03 impreza with the same final drive as my car 4.444

btw we had a extreme autox i broke the welds today :)
