What would you suggest for suspension? Where to start on the suspension, and the best bang for your buck? I dont have that much money at the moment, and college starts next fall... but college will most likely help my cause out... lol

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/06/bikesforssale006-1.jpg
Here it is, first off- this is a daily driver, i did not intend on racing it, for all purposes i use it for
this setup works nicely, dont know how well it would perform on a track.
1.02-03 wrx kyb agx struts
2.02-03 wrx wagon springs, tein s-spec front drop-1.7, rear drop-.8
3.02-03 wrx upper spring perches front and rear, rear is also the top strut mount to body.
4.02-03 rubber spring insulators for top and bottom of rear springs
5.02-03 rubber spring insulator for top of front springs
6.95-99 legacy l bump stops and dust boots( are the same size and dimension as 02-03 wrx)
they have to be cut down, spring instructions give you the dimensions needed
6A. 02-03 wrx top strut mounts
7. the brake lines do not attach to the struts in the same way as the originals legacy did. you will need
to fabricate mounts or safety wire them to the struts to prevent a brakeline failure due to chafing.
8. ride height is nice level and does not sag in rear without using any spacers
9. set agx adjusters to 1 (softest) on front, 4(stiffest) on rear, this seem to balance the damping pretty good
10. ride is obviously more rigid, but NOT bone jarring ive driven it on dirt roads, it actually sucks up the bumps pretty well, you feel them but it doesnt transfer to the body enough to make the car shudder.
11.sway bars and braces are next
12 wheels are tsw trackstar 5 16x7 with falken ziex 205-55-16 tires,
13. need to roll rear fender wells a small amount to prevent rubbing under hard cornering wit 100 lbs in rear end.
14. 100 lbs of ex wifes junk in rear area only dropped it a half inch.
15 conclusion- i spent 795.00 total on all new stuff except the perches ,(top mounts and rubber insulators 50.00 what a Blessing!)
everything was direct bolt in with no modifications required, kyb gr2 may be used as a cheaper alternative to agx's but dont know how they will work.
16. these pictures were taken before and then 100 miles after i installed the stuff
I am completly 100% satisfied on the end result.
updated info;
1. installed 98 outback front and rear sway bars, made a great difference, drastically reduced body roll, you just point and shoot the direction you want to go.
2. I havent pushed the car hard enough to determine whether it has any over/understeer,
so far i havent been able to get either end to slide yet, it seems pretty neutral front to rear, higher speeds, harder cornering im sure it will upset somewhere.
3.sway bars bolt right on, although on the front I had to use the legacy rubber bushing instead of the outback, fit a little tighter, but the metal bracket is different(ones that bolt to chassis of car, not to the end link).
4.replace front fascia panel, bumper and hood with 98 outback stuff, looks longer and lower now.

sweet i will use your tips when i do my suspension in the near future.... i was planning on using the GR-2 struts with ground control springs (they are a little more but you can adjust them a good amount) not sure what i have to get for top hats
sway bars will be soon as well (hopefuly) well when i get the spare cash.
great write up thanks

I used ground control and u dont have to get top hats you can use the stocks

06-07-2009, 02:37 PM
okay sweet... so i would just need the shocks and the ground control springs then??
i plan on using pretty much the same setup as you but not the AGX's i think i am going to use the GR-2 insead... cheaper...dont have that much money at the moment.

New exhaust finaly!!
I work at a auto parts ware house and we have our own in house pipe shop, I took in my old exhaust and had them bend me up a full cat-back section in 2 1/4 aluminized tubing. I ordered all the proper flanges and hangers (well made my own hangers), and bought a Magnaflow street performance muffler.
SOUNDS AMAZING!!!

nice looking car... how are are those hid's working in the stock headlights? i read somewhere that there are problems sometimes with the stock plastic housings..
97legacyGT2.5
08-17-2009, 12:50 AM
Yeah i got a vid of my exhaust, i took it with my phone.. i took it in they high quality so now i cant send it :-( so yeah, it will prolly have to wait till next weekend, then i will be able to use an actual vid camera, unless i get some spare time this week
Thanks, they Lights are working fine, the only problem i have had with them is the inline 20 amp fuse bruning out... the balasts take like just over 20 amps for inital fire-up, so after a while it will corode and blow... they are cheap tho. it would be nice to have clear housing too. they arn't bad but they could be better.
ill get that vid as soon as i can

i was going to ask the same thing. what did you have to do to get the stock lights to H.I.D?
97legacyGT2.5
08-19-2009, 12:04 AM
No the HID harness that came with the kit only required to be pluged into one of the H4 plugs... i just have it pluged into the drivers side H4 plug. idk why its like that but yeah the one you see in the pic i am guessing is the passenger side
This pic i am guessing

what do you mean an upgraded system?
i have had minor problems.. with the muffler/ 2 1/4" cat back section... over 4500rpm it just backs off and studders untill i shift. i am assuming this is because i dont have enought backpressure? correct me if i am wrong
evolegacy
08-19-2009, 12:12 AM
i think i honestly have too much back pressure, it pops and sputters after about 3500rpms on any gear, what i meant by upgrades is i went from a 2-2-1 UEL header system to a 4-1 EL header, dropped the diameter of the plumbing from 2 1/2 to 2 1/4, and swapped the magnaflow muffler for a meagan N1, produces more power and better fuel consumption, lol.
97legacyGT2.5
08-19-2009, 12:19 AM
TOO MUCH BACKPRESSURE?!?!? really going from the 3rd cat, resignator, oem muffler, and 2" stock piping to 2 1/4 w/o 3rd cat and resignator, and then the magnaflow straight through muffler?
to me that dosent make any sense, can you elaborate at all?
Thanks

lol this may sound alittle dumb but, the part that goes right into the back of the light (has the white label on it/and wires connected to it).. Thats obiviously part of the HID's right? You didn't have to modify anything for that?
sorry if my questions seem vague or noobish... im just a little confused. lol

the shiny round label? with the 3 wires (i think its 3) coming out of it?
That is the actual HID bulb housing, the only mod i had to do was cut the hole in the rubber gromet thing bigger (the back of the HID bulb is larger)

Oh but still shouldn't i have that problem because you now have 2 1/4 tubing, same as me (granted i dont have the equal length headder) so if you think you have too much backpressure wouldnt that be same for me?
I am still confused on how i can go from stock 2" to 2 1/4" and flow through muffler and have too much backpressure? it just dosent make any sense
evolegacy
08-19-2009, 09:04 PM
its hard to explain, im still trying to figure it out myself, Im starting to think its just the compression in the engine getting, well, compressed more than normal with the CAI i have (similiar to yours) and all that air has to go somewhere. I'll have to look more into it, I can let you know when i find something out (or if Decke48 can come up with answers)

great those are just plug and play hids. On my celica the stock h4 connectors did not have enough power to light them up. So i had to buy a h4 harness to connected them to the battery instead, so that is why i asked. lol
Yea, got my magnaflow on and it sounds awsome!!
it pops quite a bit when going from a higher gear to lower one. higher than- say, (2400 rpm)
hopefully not bad?

not really, CEL for the engine knock sensor. (CEL came up cus i took out my hoodscoop insert to make it functional, which allows water in and collects near the knock sensor and messes it up) still could be doing it tho... i have not had that problem before tho, witht the stock exhaust i ran her all the way up to 6k without that noise, power loss. now that i am thinking bout it i am guessing it is the knock sensor... shit thats $78 and the intake has to come off now too.... that could be fun...

my knock went off when i took out the insert as well, replacing it isnt a big hassle and you can pick em up cheap at a junkyard if your short on cash. I'm still researchin the popping we all are getting after about 4k in all gears, like i said in a previous post, im starting to think its a subie thing
97legacyGT2.5
08-22-2009, 02:34 AM
Yeah it could just be subi thing, but if it is a rev limiter, why is it doing it now?? it never kicked in when i had the stock intake and exhaust on, could it be that the engine is getting more air than it thinks and is chocking it off? I will try and talk to some friends in the auto industry and see if they have any clue what it is.
I rele want to get to the bottom of this at least i am not the only one experiencing these problems.
evolegacy
08-22-2009, 12:02 PM
hey i found out some info, pretty much what any of us with upgraded exhausts need to know. If you are getting popping, raspy, unwanted noise, just through a resonator into the system, there's no real issue with having these noises, its just all the air being pushed around in the exhaust as we lift off the pedal and then press back down at it, not giving the exhaust gases enough time to get out of the system. So when they are still trapped inside the system due to back pressure at higher RPMs, as soon as open up the throttle body even just a little, you'll get a sometimes loud popping noise, all this is is the cooled air inside the exhaust getting hit with the super hot air just coming out of the engine.
I personally don't mind the pops and raspyness, im sure others out there might, so if you wanna get rid of that noise, just have the exhaust shop fabricate a resonator into the system, eliminating those noises. The downside of all this is that your car will not have as much of a noticable sound as it once did, but it will still be louder than OEM. Hope this helps Sean with that problem, as for the RPM limit issue your getting, if thats in top gear your engine may be maxing out or possibly hitting a speed limiter, check your engine bay for any limiter components, most likely it will be part of the ECU though and may need to be re-tuned to remove that issue.

from what i could collect there is no negative effects on the block at all, but then again, I didnt find anything saying so. My guess is that they may or may not wear down quicker than an OEM setup or they could just be fine.

I agree, good info. i dont plan on installing a resignator, love the boxer sound!! as for the issue i am haveing with my car i am guessing its the engine knock sensor killin some power in the higher RPMs. i will try and get that replaced soon and see if that has any affect.
oh yeah i finaly got that vid on my computer now.... the sound is not that great, due to it being taken with my phone but yeah here it is

The problem Sean is having with the hesitation is the knock sensor.
The issue with the popping in the exhaust is because subarus run rich from factory and installing a resonator helps the exhaust combust unburnt gases.

lol yeah...
thats what i figured it was, after i read a post about taking the backing plate off of the hood scoop causes the knock sensor failure. shortly after i removed that plate i got a CEL, took it to advance auto and it was the knock sensor code... so yeah have to find that plate put it back on and install a new knock sensor.
Its possible to install a new knock sensor with out taking the intake off correct? not the easiest way, or would you advise takeing the intake off?
thanks

You may not even need a new knock sensor. I had the same problem with my car and simply reinstalled the blanking plate over the scoop and the knock sensor has been fine ever since.
You don't need to remove the intake to replace the knock sensor though - just wrangle your hands in there. Use compressed air to blow any dust or grit out of there first. If you have huge hands you'll need to remove the intake.
Sometimes it's just quicker to remove it, install the new part and reinstall the intake. Trying to wrangle around in there for the sake of hooking up a few vac lines is kind of ridiculous.

okay that would be nice if i didnt need a new sensor... but i put the plate in for winter and the CEL light never went off... the guys at advance said that it was probably faulty. so looks like i might need a new one :smt009
then the $109 speed sensor 2 need one of those also... :smt009

i found a bosch knock sensor for my car for like 50.00 online. i took off my intake and throttle body when replacing it. gave me some more clearance.
i think it was one of these http://www.car-stuff.com/store/?N=11736 ... 4294963662 (http://www.car-stuff.com/store/?N=11736+4294963776+1719+11921+4294963662)
only the one i got had the wrong little white connector on it so i swapped it with the old one.

I picked them up today.. only have 3 colors black, red and the teal blue.
here is a quick video I made showing how thin and flexible are they
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rthb6HiZGio
What size screws/bolts did you use?
I just noticed one board is lighter in color then the top one with the label..
*edit again
wow the transparency is very inconsistent be warned..

yeah one board in each pack is slightly more transperant than the other... i got 4 packs and use the light ones to make templates and the dark ones for the actual flaps... yeah.. it was only a lil more...

stock headers and everything except the magnaflow street series muffler.

update on the mudflaps
so far i have traveled from glendale heights IL to appleton WI (about 250mi each way) about 4 times since i have installed my IKEA mudflaps.
highway speeds 65-80 havent had any negative effects, that i can see. they are holding up great, and look great
i recomend this to anyone who wants the rally style flaps without the rally flap price...

i never realized how poorly my engine ran with a bad knock sensor! Replaced the sensor today, i can actualy rev past 4k now! Dosent bog down when starting out, and pulls hard.
next the speed sensor, sucks not knowing how fast your going!
97legacyGT2.5
10-07-2009, 10:50 PM
yeah so i replaced my knock sensor sunday. had the CEL cleared and everything worked great. today on my way home from work i noticed the check engine light was on. i tried to rev it past 4500 RPMs. same thing happened as it did when the old sensor was bad, sounded like it was hitting a rev limiter at 4500.
granted it was a used sensor, what would cause this tho fail so quickly? any thoughts?
Huffer
10-08-2009, 10:54 AM
Do you have water coming in through your hood scoop? Water will cause the knock sensor to fritz out quickly.
BTW. When you buy a used part, you run the risk of failure during your ownership because it is a USED part.
97legacyGT2.5
10-08-2009, 11:37 AM
no i put the hood scoop tray back in after the first one went out. i am guessing you are right. just an old sensor finaly giving out.
damn $5 for a used sensor is way better than the $86 i think it is for a new one lol
Huffer
10-08-2009, 11:50 AM
You should still pull the code for the CEL...
97legacyGT2.5
10-08-2009, 01:57 PM
yeah i know, i will do that after work today.
i am almost sure its the knock sensor, because of how the engine is responding (same as when the old sensor was bad) but who knows :-?
97legacyGT2.5
10-08-2009, 08:33 PM
yeah yeah yeah, you were right huffer. lol
had the code pulled it was actualy my speed sensor.
that has been out for months now. i dont know why it took 4 days after the codes were cleared to finaly regester?
so hopefuly gettting that fixed next weekend

Its been a while since i have posted.
The IKEA chopping board flaps that i installed some months back have been working awesome.
After these past few weeks with the winter weather we have been having (chicago area) the flaps have been holding up perfectly. i have not experinced any problems with them, no cracks, chips, or tears in the material. They have been keeping a decent amount of salt and snow off the side of my car. Not too shure how the spray behind me is but probably better than nothing.
I am also tempted to make a few sets of these.
let me know what you think
