Anyways, for those who can't see it, its a GC8 impreza 4 door I am converting into a RHD Version 6 STi.

Couple of questions:
Why would you go RHD?
Are there legal implications for rewiring what is originally a USDM without an OBDII system?
What about street legality regaring modifying USDM vehicles to be RHD?

I'm interested to know, because my long term goal is to bring over the shell of my GF8 Impreza, and put a built 2.5L NA engine into it.
Or maybe a 3.0L.
My Impreza is RHD, no ABS, SRS or OBDII system. It's about as light as you can get, and still have AC and full-trim (for a wagon).

So far, I've had no joy from the NHTSA or my local authorities.

it can't be illegal to turn a usdm car into a rhd....i've seen plenty of 240s that do the whole silvia conversion and they're street driven...

besides, what do postal workers use? around here they're converted jeeps and subarus...

Huffer
11-04-2005, 03:03 PM
Yeah, but I figured postal workers have some kind of special classification.

the silvia/240 conversion doesn't mean they're legal...

I see RHD Subarus, a Land Rover (old school), a civic around here. Those RHD Legacy wagons (old postal vehicles) on ebay all the time.

Its not illegal to go RHD, and I have to because 1. I want to and 2. it makes it easier for me to use the JDM DCCD controller. Also, this is gonna be a show car, and that will catch eyes. And frankly, I dont care if its legal or not, this isnt my daily driver

Oh, and that 300zx and truck arent mine, that picture is from the guy I bought it from.

Depends. He hasn't told us the year of the car. If its a 96 and his state test emissions by OBD2 plug in, well, he's in for a world of hurt if he goes backwards.

But, if its a pre-96, he can pretty much do anything he wants as long as it passes visual.

If its a 96+ and he wires in the OBD2 and can pass....well, as long as he knows when he needs to test and pass, he can do anything he wants.

RHD isn't illegal....act like a jackass while driving a RHD vehicle and the authoroties will find rules to take it away from you.

Huffer, if you want to import just the shell, there is a chance you could just do the shell (incl. chassis, brakes, and such; no drivetrain or ECU). But the rule of thumb is that whole cars that aren't/weren't intended to be sold here on US soil, get cut in half to pass through customs and DOT/EPA....for it looks to be that they will be used as clips or parts cars...not whole cars. Worth inquiring about. Ask some of the front/rear clip vendors. Kingpin, IAP are 2 of the biggest. I forget some of the others.

Anyway, sheep, that should be a sick ride when you're done. And considering that you're doing it as a show car.....means you're not leaving it that plain.

Nevermind an Impreza forum.....thats what Members Rides II is for! :-D

:P

I am actually having trouble finding a shop that doesnt have sand in their panties :x so I'm not sure if it'll be RHD right off the bat. I am just gonna hang on to the dash hardware, harness, and cut the firewall out of the clip. Oh well, that money just goes towards a Rallitek perfectpower 7, and some other goodies. Any ideas what I should have the rear seats reupholstered in to match the Version 6 front seats? Ill be doing a lot of stuff myself, so maybe I can post up some DIY threads for the good of all! Any ideas anyone has for the project are more than welcome, most is planned but a lot is just going to be decided as we go along.

Oh, the chassis is a 93, purposefully so I didnt run into problems like that.
