Car is a 98 gt 5mt, 113k on the engine, mostly stock (snorkus delete, headers, full exhaust, underdrive crank pulley. Headgasket, timing belt water pump and tensioners all done approximately 15k ago. Pulling into work this morning car made a noise like a timing belt snapped car died instantly and threw into nuetral and rolled into my parking spot. No new codes came up on the scan (o2 heater malfunction and idle system, have been on forever, I regularily check for new codes) when cranking cranks at normal speeds but doesn't sound right like timing belt jumped, small pop and backfire out the exhaust. pulled the radiator and two end covers for the timing belt seems mostly intact and tight. Couldn't get the crank pulley off to get the center cover off, will have to remoce a/c condenser on another day other than christmas eve :smt012 . Engine does turn over smooth without any scraping sounds and has at least some compression. Coolant was full no milky residue, engine oil was changed with mobil 1 about 2k ago and never uses enough to add, just checked two days ago but almost a quart low now. Didn't look contaminated or smell burnt. Any ideas? Could the belt jump? This is my daily driver and miss it already, until it's running I am forced to drive a Grand Am :smt012

So you said it cranks and everything does it still start? I am assuming not, are you getting spark?

Does crank sounds a little slower with an odd sound like starter was dragging but voltage drop was not abnormal, doesn't fire. Pulled the connector at the coil pack and doesn't backfire, so I was only assuming some kind of spark was going on.

Wow, I'm sorry man I am completely stumped if its getting spark and seems like its getting fuel anything that would be not allowing it to run right now should put up a code.

My buddy had a similar problem with his 98 bd gt 5mt. Car cranks but does not idel.. sprayed some carb cleaner in the intake and the car cranks and idels. Without the spray it wont run.

Turns out it was a dirty/greasy harness connector. Disconnect all your connectors (main harness) and clean it out and try that.

Not sure if this will solve your problem but its a suggestion.

Good luck

Thanks for the ideas guys, I will also check to see how good the spark is then check fuel pressure. I'm guessing the best spot for that is the line right after the fuel filter, unless there is a spot on the rails to hook a pressure gauge up? Couldn't find one, but that doesn't mean anything.

battery???

underdrive pulleys can cause the the alternator to not deliver full charge to the battery especially if the battery is old and/or if you have lots of other electronics. Get it tested.. could be that simple

Battery is good, car was running and died off, cranks over fairly well. 12.4v even after some cranking and only drops to 10v while cranking. Fuel pump sounds like it is running. Keep the ideas coming though any help is much appreciated, sometimes tunnel vision kicks in your baby is down.

spark, fuel, air

^ the order i would check. maybe just a loose or disconnected vacuum line???

For an update, checked for fuel, it is flowing out of the filter at a decent rate. Spark is well, pulled 2 plugs (the easy ones) and a little oily so maybe a stuck valve damaged or burnt piston. So anyone have a turbo crossmember laying around? Lookes like time for an upgrade.

All timing marks are lined up, time to dig in some more.

Well just because an engine turns over smooth doesn't mean anything. Intake valves in the oil pan, rings in the intake all the way up to the throttle and piston pieces everywhere in between. So ej20g w/ td05 on the way.

It looks like a valve dropped / broke Pics when I remember to bring one of the cameras to the shop.
