Moved the topic to Naturally Aspirated Powertrain. If this really is regarding a swapped/converted car let me know and I can move it back.

for good exhuast parts for our car you are going to have to pay.

if you want just the rumble sound, go buy a fart cannon.

if you want performance and rumble

Boxer4racing.com

or used:
25rs.com forums

borla or borla replica headers usually run 200 used 330 new
stromung highflow cat 300
stromung mid pipe 210
stromung axleback is like 350

i advice against the axleback because of how expensive it is, a lot of times you can just go to a exhaust shop, buy a universal muffler like a Borla or magnaflow

then just have them weld a new pipe from cat back
and that tends to be a lot cheaper than stromung

borla, knockoff header manifold ($180+shipping) will give you the legendary wrx boxer rumble sound everyone loves.. and you can get a cat-back for a 2.5rs for around $180 plus shipping then have an exhaust shop modify the catback for next to nothing.if it doesnt line up which i think it should on legacy sedans..

there was a WRX catback for $300 in clasifides?

for under $300 i would get a stromung or magna flow 2.25" (or around there) axel back and get an exhaust shop to fabricate a matching resenated midpipe cuz the stromung ones are spendy but the mufflers where it counts (in a cat back provided your midpipe is free of holes)

or if u want to sacrifice some sound for money alot of people have the SPT axel back

but like the WRX catback one of the best deals is to keep an eye out for people selling wrx, sti exhausts or other used performace exhaust parts

but besides that unequal length headers improve sound and flow alot by them selfes

Do you or a friend have a welder? If so, don't bother with any strong-whatever it is crap, I have no idea why people think they need to spend a million dollars on exhaust. I had $250 into my 98's exhaust when it was NA, and I bet it sounded better than anything you will buy. It was a borla knock off, magnaflow 14" long resonator, Moroso Spiral flow, 2.25'' pipe, and the last straight section was 2.5". I already had the 2 resonators, but even if I had to buy everything it wouldn't be much over $300...assuming you or a friend can do all the welding...if not, I suggest finding friends with better tools haha.

people spend the money on expensive exhaust because of R&D(research and development) to minimize exhaust restriction. maximize flow and nice sound.. if u get a cheap setup u get cheap results.. the only reason i suggested those ebay exhausts is because they are nice quality and maximize flow compared to stock. i myself have around $590 in custom mandrel bent exhaust and im still lacking a header manifold. so spend wise..its expensive

The stock WRX exhaust is pretty quiet and restrictive too. If you're just looking for sound you can easily go bigger on the exhaust and get a cheap muffler to achieve the goal.

I'm not saying they aren't quality products, I'm sure they are, but I see no point in spending that kind of money. I'd put my car's old setup against anything out there you can buy as far as Flow, and sound goes. It was All manderal bends, partially stainless and partially aluminized. I guess I'm just different since I have fabbing abilities and can use the money else where if I don't waste it on overpriced aftermarket exhaust.

I pretty much agree with this. If you buy an universal higher end muffler and resonators, there is just as much R&D in those as there is in the stromung or SPT. It just doesn't have an extra couple feet of pipe on it. It would be cheaper to have an exhaust shop fab up some stainless mandrel bent pipe for you and weld it onto the the muffler/ resonator. And it also keeps money in the local economy.

... some people found different set ups that worked for them better than what they would consider pricey, and did theirs on a budget.

Nah, I understand what you meant, but that's what happens when the corporate world tries to capitalize on a good product with overbearing prices. I've installed some and had one BTW.

It sucks too, I always loved their Cat-backs. :-( Never had a fitment problem or a dis-satisfied customer.

I've had an '05 STI exhaust and a APEX'i N1 on my RS, both with and without my Borla header. I must say, I'm very very pleased with my STI exhaust + Borla header because it is still quiet however will get downright nasty under wide open throttle. It has boxer rumble as well. My N1 was quite loud and developed a huge leak so I had to take it off however I loved the aggressive style of it and do miss it on occasion. For the record, the STI exhaust will need to be modified slightly to fit an N/A application, the flange on the midpipe that meets the cat will need to be rotated. I had an exhaust shop remove my resonator in the process so that could be the reason for the added rumble. I got my Borla header for $50 and the STI exhaust for free, but I've bought another one since for a friend for $50. The exhaust shop charged me $100.

Out of curiosity, is the mid pipe, or the muffler the part which is different on the wagon?
