View Full Version : Gear Oil - What type? How many quarts?

I'm about to change my gear oil. Checked the owners manual and my chiltons manual to find how many quarts I should order to do the job and it's not listed :smt017 seems like an important tid bit of information...

So.... question: What is the best gear oil to use in our leggys and how many quarts to change the transmission and rear differential? Any reviews on the different brands? Redline or Royal Purple? Thanks!

Rear diff 1 liter of motul

Trans is 4.5? Quarts and there is a lot of debate about what to run. I'm running straight syncromesh cause my syncros are toast as it is and my trans is taking a shart and I just want it to shift decently until I granade it at the strip in the spring and have to swap it.

The motul 80w-90 is good stuff to use but not sure about an addiative for the diffs.

Hey thanks for the info. 6 quarts would be enough to do the tranny and rear differential then. Any others who have changed their gear oil recently know what to get?

The transmission takes 3.8qts and the rear diff takes about 0.8qts, so you'll need 5 quarts for everything.

If you want your car to shift like butter and not ruin your syncros in the long run or anything, look into 'Extra-S'. It's the OEM fluid for the car and there's a few articles on it on nasioc if you want to know more. I switched over to it when I bought the car and couldn't be any happier with it.

$55 will get you 5 quarts at http://www.5-starperformance.com Make sure you talk to Jeremy if you do, too.

Awesome thank you, I thought there might have been some special stuff out there and the price isn't bad... just might do it. I like how they include the quarts you will need on the page :roll:, brilliant.
