whats up guys
im new to the subaru group and jsut wanna say you guys got a great site here

now my question is i have a 98 legacy gt limited and i noticed that in the wheel wells there are rubber modlings on the inside. i know on the honda this is a major cause for rust in the wheel wells and they are almost always reoved. i was wondering if they should be removed on the legacys as well as i dont wanna find any rust because of this later

thanks for your help

Rubber doesn't rust...

The wheel well is there to ensure you don't end up flinging road crap into the chassis...

i think he's referring to the water that gets UNDER the rubber mouldings.

i think he's referring to the water that gets UNDER the rubber mouldings.

thats how I was reading into it.

Yeah, makes sense to me. I've got bubbling at the rear quarters at the wheel well.....damn moisture lock.

Its so bad, that the rubber is getting pushed away from the body.

ARGH.

yeah i meant the water getting underneath the rubber moulding and getting locked in there causing rusting.
i figured i should remove it cause water is definitly gonna get stuck in there and when road salt is a factor the rusting rate will definitly increase.

had to remove it on the honda this should be no different.
i am refferingt o the rear wheel wells

Well, there are pros and cons to this...

If you get rid of them, yes the moisture lock issue is gone, but then you expose the metal to debris coming off the tires and will eventually ware the paint off and expose bare metal (why they are there to begin with)... Then you have to worry about rusting again. I would try and take them off and clean under them. Then try to find a way to re-adhear them in such a way that they are sealed and nothing can get underneath (if that's possible of course) Haven't looked real close to see about that.

well whgat i thought bout was taking them off and then cleaning under them thouroghly. after i was gonna buy a can of black stone guard and spry that wherre the moulding was to prevent the debris problem
there is no way to get water trapped underneath it because it is sprayed on and the wheel well is protected
