View Full Version : 2000-2004 Legacy and Outback grill the same?
I hate the chrome strip on the grill of my Legacy. Since the Outback grills I've seen don't have that chrome strip, I'd like to swap it out. Just need to know if it fits since I don't have access to one to try out.
Thanks.

Paint?
Paint?
If I'm going to paint the grill I have, I'm also going to cut out the middle and add mesh. And I'm too lazy to do that now :)

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure I have an outback grill on my BE right now but I could be wrong?

+1 i think they are the same, ive seen some cars with outback grills if yu dont liek the chrome strip you can remove the grille and pain it all black or body colour, it makes noticable difference

I believe my wife's 2000 Outback had an identical (in size anyway) grill as my Leg. If you don't like the chrome, why don't you get a JDM "L7" grill?

I'm not against that at all. The only one I've seen on eBay had some insane shipping charge from hong kong. Know where else I can pick one up?

Keep looking on eBay, one will come up. And occasionally a member here has one for sale.
You can also check out http://www.5mileimports.com - Kevin might be able to bring you one in.

What the... bigger? Huh? How? I've never heard of a Legacy/Outback front end being very different besides the bumper, and that's generally just the bumper being taller to make room for nice big foglights.
There was a facelift on the second gen's where the grill got bigger (specifically taller) due to a deeper cutout into the bumper, but that's all I can think of. I have a hard time believing that any large, internationally popular car maker such as Subaru would waste the money developing the molds for different sized grills for two cars that share the same chassis, but that's just me.
Oh yeah, that whole second gen facelift jive reminds me, I still need to send another 150 bucks over to tweeter516 so I can get my new bumper! Hope he's still around

From what I remember, I've had dodik's car right next to my old BE and my grill would leave a gap if placed on his car therefore the outback grill is taller. I've also asked andivic and he seems to remember that as well.
dodik chime in if u see this..

I'm kind of in the same boat - want to ditch the chrome but too busy to paint myself, don't want to go L7 because I want to keep the round Subie stars logo....

Yeah, I think what I'm going to end up doing is cutting out all the "honeycomb" and painting the whole thing black, and put some mesh behind the logo and support. Just need the garage to warm up a bit so I can paint in there.
