possible knock sensor troubles?

My girlfriends 96 2.5GT Wagon has been hesitating lately. It has been throwing a knock sensor CEL on and off and I was wondering if that is most likely the problem. The thing is, is that there is no actual knock and the problem is not always constant. Sometimes it runs fine and other times it hesitates badly and motor sounds as if it is not firing on all cylinders. Any Help?

Mine didn't knock either when it went bad. That's not an actual sign of a bad knock sensor.... just a myth :smt002


My CEL came on and off, then 1 day just stayed on. My car also ran OK as far as I was concerned until I changed it and it ran like I had just taken it off the lot.


Replace the sensor, and you should notice a significant difference. Have it scanned and cleared if it doesn't clear itself already. Mine cleared itself. My gas mileage, performance and sanity came back after I replaced mine.

Happened to mine for over a year, I decided to fix it this passed week. Make sure when you install your new sensor, take a piece of sand paper and sand down the area where the knock sensor sits.
You'll feel a noticeable difference in engine idle and driving.
