im wondering if a 05 outback 5mt would work in my 01 gt?

yes it will have a taller 5th gear though. its a 4.11

ok. so i got a hole 05 tranny swap kit. i need the c clips for the front and rear axels. i cant find the part number and the damn stealership i called were dicks(screw napa, autozone, shucks).

ok so i got the 01 tranny and rear diff out. now i have a problem. the 05 axels have no ABS sensors on them. also the 05 tranny does not have a speed sensor. took the cap off that coverd were the 01 tranny snesor is, but no gear under the cap for a speed sensor. how does the 05 get its speed and ABS? also will a 2nd gen tranny work?

well i said screw it and took apart both trannies to see what i could do. it is damn easy to do. the car should be up and running again by monday.

got everything in, but my 5th gear doesnt fell the same. the rpm is alot higher than it was with the 01 tranny and diff. how do i tell the rear diff ratio? the front diffs were the same from the 05 to 01, just diff style.

Usually the rear diff has a code stamped on it, that relates to the FD.

The ratio of your rear diff is 4.11, I can guarantee you that didn't change. If you want to make sure, you can pop the rear cover off the diff and count the number of teeth on the ring gear. You would need to unbolt the driveshaft and/or disconnect the axles to do this.

The reason your rpm's are higher in 5th is because it's an Outback tranny, and Outback's have always used a shorter 5th gear ratio than the Legacy. Not sure why, but that's just the way they did it.

If I had to guess, I'd say you went from a 0.780 ratio to around a 0.871 ratio. At least, that's what it was for earlier model Outbacks.

Subaru stopped putting stamps on the rear diffs early-mid 90's.

^^ no kidding? So how do they know in the warehouses what diffs are for which vehicles? They can't possibly pop the covers off each diff to count teeth. I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure my 98 has a set of numbers stamped on the outside casing.

Instead of the sticker (or stamp, whatever you want to call it) on the rear diff cover, they simply started marking the top of the actual carriers with a two-digit code in white ink.

For example, mine was stamped 'T1', which denotes a 3.900 non-LSD differential. If I can find a picture I will show you.

so since i have had the tranny in for almost a week i have noticed some differances. the gears in the outback tranny are shorter(final is still 4.11). with the gears shorter the car is a new beast. alot faster than with the 01 gears. the only thing that i kind of dont like it the 5th gear. 3500rpm at 70mph. 01 tranny it was 2700rpm at 70mph.

my car is like 3200 at 70mph with a 4.11 5MT, the 5th gear is just that different? I though the ouback gears were taller making them a lower ratio and in turn a lower engine speed for each wheel speed....

The only reasonable explanation I can think of is that the shorter gears would make up for the larger tire size diameters on the Outback.

they make the outback gears that much shorter so that with the big tires it doesnt seem that gut less. we all know what are cars are like, just imagine putting 215/65/17 on your car. it would be horrible.

i like the way the car is now, just need to fix the exhaust(to loud for the kids).
