does anyone know what year RS exhaust would fit the 2001 legacy best. I know its gonna be 2 short and i was wondering if the bug eye rs might fit better since those cars are longer. If anyone has tried this or can give me any suggestions please let me know

the axleback will fit, but u need a longer midpipe.

If I remember right, it'll need quite a bit of reworking. There was someone on here with a red BE with an 05+ RS axleback (stock) on their car. The problem is the rear suspension on BE's are nothing like the other imprezas/legacies.

This post shows the BE exhaust is designed differently because of the rear suspension design found in this gen:

It appears to me that it would require an unreasonable amount of effort or money to make an RS or WRX cat back exhaust fit the BE. I would love to hear from someone who has had success trying this, because having that option would open a lot of possibilities.
AFAIK, unless you're willing to spend about $640 on a Stromung cat back (I read somewhere this has been discontinued for BE?) or much more on something imported, you're pretty much SOL with the exception of custom. Maybe you can find something used from JHOT or some importer if you're patient.
Here's a good discussion I came across where someone decided to go with a Stromung cat back and HFC ($1104.32 shipped = yikes!):

I plan to bring a universal HFC and muffler to an exhaust shop and have them complete the set up with 2.25".

The Subaru Genome mufflers are great. Nice and quiet, but grumbly. :)

I don't understand people's aversion towards just going to your local muffler shop and having them weld up a catback exhaust for you.
I've had it done twice already and both times it turned out to be 1/2-1/3rd the cost of any of these supposedly godlike pre-bent exhausts. Both times I've had some sort of STi muffler in the back and it sounded good.

Exactly what I was going to say. Ask around and find a decent local shop. Then let them work their magic.

i was quoted at 75 dollars just for the labor of cutting/rotating the flange on a wrx catback not to mention the cost for whatever length of pipe would have to be added, it seems a little pricey to me dont you think?

No. I paid $105 for a custom resonated midpipe, hanger relocation and flange rotation on my 05 STi axleback. Been that way for nearly 2 years and no problems.

Seems reasonable, especially if the parts are included. If you don't want to pay that, then do it yourself, it's not particularly hard with the right tools...
