Had to go rescue my mom from the side of the road, good thing I brought along extra coolant and water.

Couldnt figure out why the coolant I added wasnt sucking in from the resevoir, then I realised the radiator was stone cold

The car is definitly leaking onto the exaust, dont see any oil in the coolant though (not that there was any!)

Just wondering the possibilities. Its a 2000 Outback. Since its (most likely) an exterior leak will stop leak work? (I dont know if they added it or not...) Warranty coverage? (it has 65k km) Any advice would be appreciated!

That sucks. Maybe the thermometer is stuck closed?

Wouldnt be the thermostat. Once I got more coolant into the radiator the temp was fine. Its more where the coolant is going, and how to stop it.

looks like you might have to throw it up on stands and run the engine until the coolant circulates. then GINGERLY crawl under the mother (not a pun) and snoop around.

might a dab of JB Weld fix a leak like that it's it isn't too big?

Haha, thermometer... I meant thermostat.

So is it that the fluid just isnt returning to the radiator?

The coolant isnt returning to the radiator because its leaking out of the head gasket (Im 99.9% sure its the HG, because thats the common problem on these 2.5L engines)

Either
A) I put stop leak in the coolant and it fixes it (Not sure if it will work, I think it depends on whether the leak in internal or external)
B) Replace the HG myself, uggg!
C) Warranty/recall applies and Subaru does it for free (unlikely!)

there's no collant left in the radiator, i.e., it's dry. the collant has leaked out onto the exhaust.

ok, went to the dealership and they changed the coolant and added a stop leak (it was actually a recall that was never done) We will see how it goes

You mean the coolant conditioner...right? You should add at every coolant service! It's $1.93 fix(fromthe dealer!!!) WOW!
