i dont think there is anything out there like open ecu/ rom raider like there is for my wrx, so are we stuck with a safc neo and an aftermarket ignition from msd?

Your tuning options depend on your wallet size.
You can go full standalone or piggyback.
What's your goal, and budget?

budget depends on gains and reliability ~ 1000 though

I'll give you the rule of thumb when it comes to modding:
"Fast, cheap, reliable. Pick two."

 Oh boy... No matter how many times you post this, I still can't get my options straight!
Well, is it just electronics or bolt ons for a grand?
I can say that I've read here that E.L. headers, Intake and a reputable cat-back would put you near that 1K limit.
As far as ignition goes, some here have done the "Neon" coil swap, but opinions vary on this.
Do a search in the DIY and also search the members mods list. It's a sticky on here.

Ughh... Here we go again... Another "I've gotta WRX fully modded, so I'm god", Who gives a crap. :smt018 You're useless. Go back to NASTYCOCK or ICAR!!!!!, but before you do...
Post in the "drunk thread" You whino!!!
If your car is "well modded", why are you asking for mechanical/electrical advice? Most Parts are interchangeable. Use the "SEARCH" feature like most Noobs.... :smt023
....and enjoy yourself while you're here.
Thank you.... Come again!

Okin, WTH?
dozer - check out the PP6 offered by Rallitek. It's probably the best supported piggyback in the US for these cars.
There is no AccessPort or openecu tuning available at this time.
subaru_terrence in Canada has a PP6 on his BE and reported some decent gains. He also has lightweight pulleys (he's a test mule for GroupA).
Good luck.

Rallitek PP6...
You could try an Apexi SAFC or GReddy Emanage...
